Proper RPMS for MPH

Hey guys,

I just purchased a Certified Used 2003 Toyota 4 Runner 4x2 V8 Limited. I noticed that my rpms were hovering around 3000, while driving on the freeway at approximately 75mph. Is this normal? Also, I noticed I am allowed to drive in 4D, 3, & 2L. What's the deal with that?

Are you sure it's in 5th gear (move the handle to right in drive)? It should indicate on the dash display which gear you're in. I believe 2200 rpm for 75 mph is about right.

Pal,

Maybe you noticed it, maybe not. Maybe I am reading your msg wrong.

But being a V8 you have 5 gears: L,2,3,4,D. 2 and L are separated gears not one 2L, same with 4 and D not 4D move your lever left to right.

Cheers!

F.

The '03 V8's I believe have a 5 speed transmission. What you are looking at is D, 4, 3, 2, L or all 5 gears represented in the gearbox. The wierd shift gate pattern lets you select all of these gears at any given time (assuming you are going the correct speed).

Pulling the lever down to D from park selects drive and gives the transmisson access to all five gears. Moving the lever to the left selects 4 and locks out 5th gear. Pull the lever back and 3 is selected, locking out 4th and 5th gear. Pull the lever back again and a little to the right will select 2 and lock out 3rd, 4th and 5th. Finally, moving the lever to the right at the bottom of the gate will select 1, and allow you only to travel in 1st gear. Read the manual and play around with it a little and you will figure it out.

3000 rpm seems a little high at 75mph. Maybe you were in 4 with 5th gear or D locked out. The display on the instrument cluster will tell you what gear you have selected.

Mine revs about 3100 at 75mph in 4th gear so it is most likely not in D (5th gear) where mine goes down to about 2200.

Thumbs up THANKS EVERYONE

Well,

Turns out that I was in 4th gear, and a simple shift to the right, got myself back where I should've been in the first place. Now, my RPM's hover around the 2000 mark while driving 75MPH on the freeway. I feel alot better now. I thought I might have bought a vehicle with a shotty tranny.

Thanks again everyone for you help and advice. I greatly appreciate it.
