4.0 Supercharger experience
Hey folks,
Im looking for feedback from folks that have supercharged their trucks. Even if they have something similar like a S/C FJ and their real world experience. Besides the obvious fun that comes with forced induction, Im really needing more power out of the truck for towing. I am not worried about gas mileage or any of that kind of stuff, just reliability and if any of y'all have towing experience before and after it.
I am looking at upgrading to a 7x12 or 7x14 Vnose trailer and the wind resistance on the highway really puts a strain on the truck. Ive thought about getting a truck but I really don't want to start from scratch to build another "show" vehicle for our company. Now before I get crap about overloading or towing too heavy, the trailer won't be loaded down with a lot of weight, we just really need the space. Ive got a prodigy P3 brake controller and have been towing for years and it won't be over 5500 pounds total, its really just the wind resistance that slows me down and being underpowered is a HUGE pet peeve of mine lol.
Right now Im looking at the URD kit and they are telling me the 05-09 kit will fit my 04. Im waiting to hear back from them to verify that and what other if any modifications Ill need to make. Now at $5,600 this is no cheap mod, but if it maintains that this truck will meet all of my needs then its worth it not to get another vehicle. I will also be looking at upgrading the valve body on the trans from http://www.importperformancetrans.com/index.shtml, Ive got an aux transmission cooler with fan and switch to keep the temps under control.
Thanks in advance-
***Update***
I talked to Steve @ URD and he confirmed that the 05-09 4runner kit WILL work with the 03-04 4.0 but its a special order item. They have to make some minor changes within the circuit boards but that kit will work!

Ignoring the fact I haven't owned a 4.0, if I was looking at serious towing, I'd get the 2uz 4.7 v8 instead of hopping up the v6. Cheaper and a more sound idea. Unless you are in love with a low pressure supercharger

its not that Im in love with a low boost supercharger, its the fact that I have way too much time and money in my current truck lol. If I was going to replace it then I wouldn't get a 4runner to do the towing, I would get a truck. I love my 4Runner and its been the best vehicle we have ever owned, so If another $5k will make it continue to suit all my needs then it really isn't that bad of an investment. Plus, lets face it...Boost is FUN lol

Low pressure or not, the TRD supercharged V6 puts out more HP AND torque at the same RPM. Sounds like a solid enough reason to get one, if cost wasn't a constraint.
Supercharged 4.0: 304 HP @ 5400 RPM (versus 260 HP @ 5400 RPM for the V8) and 334 ft-lbs @ 3600 RPM (versus 306 @ 3400 RPM for the V8).

Depending on the spool. But in all honesty I would rather not tow with non diesel turbo ( if that sentence makes sense). I would rather tow with a super charger.

Exactly, also I don't know of any turbo kits for the 4runner, I haven't found any that have the entire kit for $5500. (Tuning, fuel injectors, fuel pump, reliability and proven track record).
I love turbos but the tuning would be the most difficult, especially for any 03-04

Nope, I have no experience with superchawhatcha-call-its... I have those cool train horns.
Mike, I just got off work...to answer your question . I have not had any tranny slipping issues. I have had it heat up pretty good driving (260*) spikes in deep sand and climbing steep grades off road. I added a trans cooler, and it is 180-220 according to the scangage II.
