Need a new cat converter....

Need a new catalytic converter. I know they're expensive, but will install myself. Any OEM or aftermarket suppliers to save me some coin on this? I would rather not spend 600 on an OEM.

Thanks!

BTW - i've got an 03 SR5 v6 automatic.

Why do you think you need a new catalytic converter?

The reason I'm asking is because there have been MANY MANY catalytic converters replaced when the real problem was just an O2 sensor. If you have a bad cat...then there's a code that's thrown to the ECU. If you have a bad O2 sensor (usually down stream O2 sensor)...it can throw the same code as a bad cat.

Further tests need to be done to determine if it's a bad O2 sensor or in fact a bad cat.

I'm in the same spot as the OP. With 248k on the odometer the dealer scanned it and it was the converter Bank 2 and they gave me the part #. Now, I read BlackWorks sticky about drilling a hole to check and wonder if ANYONE ever had that done at a dealer?

OP - Check RockAuto.

Sorry, should have mentioned in my first post, my brother used to be a car tech at a dealership, he scanned it and it threw the cat code for the right cat, not the O2 sensor. I'd be much much happier if it were for the sensor since they're cheap.

From what i've been quoted from the local Austin dealership, they say approximately 2k-2100 for parts and labor, but we've got all the tools. 134k on the truck now and needs tires soon...would rather toss money into mods (you know how it is)

Thanks for the Rock Auto suggestion. Checked and they have a good selection, and they're cheap. My only worry would be getting something that would last 1 emission cycle because it doesn't have enough platinum, palladium, and rhodium.

You can NOT determine if it's a bad cat from just scanning it. A bad O2 sensor can give a false reading making the ECU think it's a bad cat. Further testing needs to be done. Not sure of the procedure for the 4runner...but my Pathfinder you had to ground unplug the O2 sensor and then jumper a couple wires....etc...

Scanning just tells you that the O2 sensor is sending a reading to the ECU of the air-flow ratio. That ratio is either a true reading...or a false reading because the O2 sensor is bad.

Update - How to test an O2 sensor....Here's a test for the Honda... I'll bet the Toyota O2 check is similar.

Thought about doing this, but probably won't pass emissions tests this coming year.
