check your muffler heat shield on the passenger side. the heatshield probably is loosely attached to the body.

I had a similar knocking sound to what you guys were describing. It turned out to be the k&n air filter knocking on my wheel well... I am embarrassed how long it took me to diagnose. I thought for sure it was something more serious.

Well, I just installed a Toytec ultimate lift and the clunking sounds like it got louder when I lifted my 4Runner. Before on my stock suspension/height it wasn't as loud going over speed bumps but now it got louder to a point in scared of speed bumps. Is replacing the sway bar bushing a guarantee it would go away? If not, what other issues has someone fixed to get rid of the clunking?

New sway bar bushings fixed my problem. Later the noise came back, but a shot or two of synthetic grease (I installed aftermarket brackets with grease fittings and neoprene bushings) killed the noise again. Quiet ever since.

I might remove my sway bar and see if the problem persist

I picked up a set similar to this at a local Jeep joint.

Prothane Greaseable Sway Bar Bushings | Prothane

Front Eng Clunking Sound

I have a 2008 SR5. The clunking sound coming from my front end turned out to be due to the front stabilizer bushings. The sway bar is supposed to twist while seated in the rubber bushings but I think the rubber became less supple and was gripping the bar too much and allowing the bar to smoothly twist in the mount. When it finally did give, it made a clunking sound. I replaced the bushings with new ones but probably could have just taken it apart and put some silicone grease between the bar and the bushing and solved the problem. Easy cheap fix. FYI the bushing bracket clamps are marked left and right.

This thread is great! I'm having the freaking clunk and it sounds like I need to look all over!

Removed front sway bar

Anyone have any advice for what to check next if you still have a popping sound after removing the front sway bar. I removed it and it got rid of the scratching sound of the sway bar rubbing on the coil perch but I still have the pop when turning at low speeds or going over bumps. It’s intermittent.

Could tie rod ends be the culprit?

They could be, I would expect to see unusual tire wear though if this has been going on for some time. Jack the front up and and put some muscle on it or pry on it intelligently to check for slop. That noise turning at low speeds is a known symptom of outer cv axle failure. You can check them for excessive lateral play the same way. Sh1t like this is how you get to know your girl intimately. 🙏

I had something similar happen with an old Nissan Sentra and the problem was the strut bearing that was shot.
