running up 3 gears in 4L seems aggressive. i use 4L offroad fairly often and it is an absolute tank gear. i didnt even know that it shifted in 4L. edit: i was probably using 2g or Lgear in 4L

well, I ran into the whole 4wd in general not working, which is BS because I wheel the crap out of my rig .
Took the transfer actuator out cleaned it, cleaned the leads made sure everything was making contact and the motor working along with new sensors annnnddd.. it kinda worked except 4lo was not engaging properly.
So I got a new transfer actuator through a Yota dealer plug But haven't had time to pull it apart, just got all the seals to freshen everything up.
sooo just some food for thought. cheers

After years of not regularly cycling 4WD, I started to do this. At first, it didn't do anything. Now it is working well. Good thread and thank you for the insight.

I have been putting mine in 4WD at least once a month, or any time it rains. When raining it definitely holds the road better, especially when turning right from side roads onto main roads. No wheel spin.
I don't know how often my 4Runner was put in 4WD before I bought it, but I have noticed it goes in and out easier than it did when I first bought it. The first thing I did when I bought it a little over a year ago was to have the diffs and transfer case gear oil drained and filled with Amsoil.

A couple weeks ago I switched into 4hi to exercise the system and drove around in a wooded area and out of no where the 4lo light starts blinking without me having touched the knob. It would not come out of 4hi after that until I turned off the engine and restarted it. Now I’m nervous about switching back to 4hi.

Our 2003 v8 won’t go into 4wd lo. When trying to get it to engage should I be switching in and out of 4lo or just switch to 4lo and leave it there? Phil

Make sure you're stopped and in neutral before switching to Lo. Switch and then give it some time for the light to stop flashing.
