This is a good reminder! Subbing this thread so I can remember to exercise my new-to-me 03 4runner.

Here's the July reminder, a few days early because I know I won't be near a computer on the 1st.

When I try, the yellow 4LO light just blinks indefinitely. Underneath the truck I can hear a faint beeping coming from the actuator. I've tried tapping the actuator with a rubber mallet and it doesn't help.
I don't use 4LO and it really doesn't bother me that much that it doesn't work. Certainly not enough to drop the cash on a new transfer case or actuator.
My question is this... if I keep trying to get it into 4LO every month or so when I give the 4HI a workout, is there any chance that at some point over the next few years it might just break loose and start working again?

So I bought my 04' used in 2013 and did not test the 4wd system before I bought it (stupid I know) but I also was unable to get 4Lo to engage. I kept trying and eventually it just started working. Now it engages smoothly within a second or two. Thanks to this reminder thread, I engage 4hi, 4lo and Center Diff at least once a month. Hopefully yours will do the same, I would just keep trying every now and then and maybe you'll get lucky like I did.

Same as Acronin2 here. Bought my '06 18 months ago without testing 4lo and it did not work when I tried it. I kept trying at least monthly and, finally, last week it started working. Works very smoothly now. I am guessing that after a trip in 110 degree heat that the white lithium grease in the actuator softened up enough to free up the plastic gears. Keep trying. Yours may do the same! Good luck.

To echo the previous 2 responses.... Probably yes.

I did this yesterday while on a forest-service road....all seemed to go well. I put it in 4Lo as well. One question- while the Diff Lock light comes on and VSC is off, is that sufficient to know that the CDL is actually on? I know 4Lo comes on based on how 4Lo obviously shifts and drives but not sure if the lights are enough to tell me that the CDL is activated.

Also curious about this for testing before purchasing.
For us city dwellers - would a boat launch/curb be a decent place to exercise the 4wd?

Pavement would be fine for 4Hi, but go out of town and find a gravel road or lot to engage 4Lo.

There is no reason 4LO can't be selected on pavement as long as the center diff lock is left unlocked.

Doing my monthly "tighten your shit" routine while putting my sway bar back on and found both UCA bolts working themselves out. Pretty scary to see them since I checked a few weeks ago. This simple check just saved me from a bad situation!

Soooooo
Who has been switching over to 4x4 Hi and NOT 4lo? Like me? I've had my rig since April 2010 and NEVER switched over to 4Lo. I highly doubt it was used before as it's previous owner used to live in an "uppity' neighborhood.
