Turn the knob from 2hi to 4 hi in drive any speed up to 60mph.
From dead stop, go into neutral, 4hi to 4 low, wait for it to engage, then go into drive.
If it beeps at you for any operation, then it failed. Restart. If it keeps beeping no matter what, then you probably got a busted transfer case actuator. Expensive fix.
Search is your friend on this topic.

No reason why you can't try it on dry pavement. This is also documented in your owner's manual.

Got my 4 Runner 2.5 months ago and I've gone ~30 miles offroad in hi/lo with the diff locked. It's getting exercised
Subbed for the reminders

Just exercised my 4Hi and 4Low around the parking lot at the train station.
I put the monthly reminder in my phone and since doing this once a month, shifting from 2H to 4H has been very quick (~ 5 seconds) and even faster into 4low.
If you haven't changed out your fluid, I would do that. After changing my fluid out in my diffs, the shifting was much faster, which got quicker the more I exercised it using this reminder.
Thanks again for the great thread!

Stupid paper
I'd be out giving it a chance to stretch it's little stock legs out, but I'm stuck writing a 1000 word paper...
Maybe next week?
I suppose it's just as well to run the actuator on pavement as long as I don't lock the center diff...

Great reminder. Didn't check the 4LO on the SR5 when I bought recently, but it went into H4 easily enough. Couldn't get 4LO to engage at all, kept flashing, so as I drove around I kept engaging and disengaging H4, driving for 10 miles, etc. tonight I drove home in H4 and when I tried to engage 4LO it worked just fine. I'll keep it exercised thanks to this reminder.
