Can you create a filter that sends user's to the FJ lift info sticky whenever they try to create a new thread asking about FJ coils and 5100's?

5th Gen brake mod upgrade

A 5thGen brake upgrade sticky would be a good idea as well since I have seen so many of those posts yet cant seem to find them anymore. Or I am just an idiot that can't search right...

newbie trying to make first post

Hello, I joined this forum yesterday but it still prevents me making my first post by starting a new thread on this 4th gen 2006 section or any other section. Can you tell me what it is I have to do?

I believe you have to have 15 posts before you can start a topic, spent a little time and give a honest reply to a few interesting to you topics to get the required posts!

It's this way to avoid Spammers be able to just join and start numerous topics.

By all means ask away, it may help others who may have the same question but hesitate to ask!

Most are here for 3 reasons, to learn, and to help others with what they have learned either here or through life itself, and a few that supply services and resources/parts, the last group also make it possible for this forum to be here by sponsoring the forum, without them no forum, and parts we need to keep our T4Rs road worthy!

questions from a newbie on 4th gen. 2006 4wd

OK here goes then, I have a number of questions about buying a 4runner when I travel to the states next year, with a view to driving through Mexico and Central America - as a semi converted sleeper/camper.

1. There is alot I like about gen. 3 but according to my research, the gen. 4 is 6" longer, which would make alot of difference for me sleeping - for my height of 6'4".

2. It seems that out of all the 4th gen. that the 2006 model is the biggest - 2" wider, which would also make a difference when converting to a camper.

3. The only 2006 4WD version is the LTD, correct? I am not interested in the SR5 as the height is only 68" versus 71.5" in the other models. (Wikipedia)

4. I would prefer a 3 litre petrol engine for economy. I am not sure of the consumption (or power when loaded up a bit) on either the 3 or 4 litre either. Or if the 3 litre is hard to find.

5. There is a 4 and 5 speed automatic available, which is the best and easiest to find? Combined with what motor. The most economical/reliable? I am not going to be doing any radical 4wdriving or conversions!

6. I see alot of high mileage models listed at 190,000 miles. Is there an average life that these motors have? I notice that the lower mileages like 100,000 or 140,000 still go for a relatively high price, up to $18,000.

7. If I landed in LA, is Craigslist going to have the best selection from private sellers? Anywhere else worth trying between Santa Barbara and San Diego out as far as Phoenix?

Thanks for your attention!

The 2006+ 4runners aren't any larger that I know of, but their fender flares are wider than the previous years which I would guess causes the discrepancy in stats. Interior cabin size is unchanged.

You imperial units might be different, in our units, the 4th gen 4runners came with either a 4.0 liter V6 or 4.7 liter V8 and either motor should do fine for your needs. V6 would get a couple MPG better while the V8 will have more torque and both motors are easily found in the 4th gen, close to a 50/50 split probably.

The 4 and 5 speed are just are reliable, the 4 speed is found solely in the 2003 and 2004 V6 trucks.

I would easily recommend the 4th gen over the 3rd gen for extended trips based of the smoothness of the powertrain and interior room.

New I here looking for information about 4thGen v8 4Runner Limited. I found an 06 with low miles that has the set up for 3rd row seats (seats were lost and not included). Was the 3rd row option for the v8 limited common? I don’t see many at all so thought I would ask this group. Thanks in advance!

It should or use to be 15, but I have seen some start a topic at 10 posts lately, have you tried now that you have 10(?), if you still can't, reply to 5 more topics and you should be good to go.

@aussietraveller - Re: #3, 4WD is available in all 3 4th Gen trims: SR5, Sport Edition, & Limited. Note that V6 4x4 models have 2WD/4HI/4LO modes w/locker selectable in 4WD while V8 models are full-time 4WD with 4LO & locker selectable.

Re: #6, a properly maintained 4th Gen can last well past 200K miles but obviously, in general, the fewer miles the better.

You will want to check for excessive frame rust and ensure that all 4x4 modes operate properly before buying a particular vehicle. Many 4x4 owners seldom use their 4WD and the actuators can bind up from disuse.

Good info available here & listed by year in the left column here.

Happy to answer any other questions here or in PMs, motivated in part by the exceptional kindness shown to me last year by some of your countrymen.

Cheers!

Stickies are a great place to start looking for information, but large combined threads are difficult to search. On another forum, there is a thread with over 5000 pages. No one is going to read thru all those pages. I know that's extreme, but I probably wouldn't even attempt a 100 page thread in a search for information.

I like to do title searches. Searching the whole thread usually gives too many hits with topics I really don't care about.

I really don't see a problem with the traffic or threads on the 4th gen page now. I'm. on here a couple times a day and if there wasn't as many threads I would just go to another site. If your tired of responding to similar threads then don't, let someone else chime in. I mean if your only response is going to be "search is your friend" why bother. Post a link instead. Not everyone is as computer savvy as the next.

I'm all for using this forum as a communication tool where people can talk and look up info.

I personly, am grateful for the help I have been given and for the time people put into documenting their work in the past.

Thanks!
I agree! I'm one of those non computer savvy people! As a matter of fact this is the first forum I have ever really participated in. I find it fairly easy to navigate, but the reason it gets tough is my own ignorance! Not the layout
I just enjoy the information I can glean from the threads and add my two cents. Thank you for all you Moderators and Administrators do!
