V8 4Runner PCV valve replacement with pics

The title is pretty self explanatory, replacing the Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve on my 2004 V8 4Runner. This took maybe 5 minutes with the part and tools ready. This was the original valve too...yuck. I got the valve on Amazon for under ten bucks.

All you do is pull off the rubber hose and a small rubber shroud around the valve, set it aside. Use a wrench or pliers to loosen the old valve. Wipe off any residue around the hole, trying not to let any crud fall in. Next, screw in the new valve. I believe the torque specs are 20 ft/lbs torque. Replace the shroud, the hose, and bingo...that's it.

I did thread the new valve more than it looks. The only tool you need is a wrench or even some channel lock pliers. It was a little tough getting the old one off, but leverage helped. Anti seize may not be a bad idea for the new threads.

How did you know it needed to be replaced, any symptoms? How many miles on the old one?

@03_4x4Runner Here's what the other end looked like, with about 145k miles on the clock.

No symptoms. But I was curious to see the state of the valve. I did a visual inspection and noticed some oil accumulating on the tube side of the valve. After removing I noticed this end of the valve. I thought better safe than sorry, it looked to be in a pretty crappy state.

I picked up new pcv valves yesterday for all 3 our toyotas (2 runners and one corolla) from the dealer (had a 10% off coupon and got all 3 for $16.67 after tax)... great minds think alike.

No issues with any of mine either but after 152k, 115k and 75k miles on the vehicles I figured it couldn't hurt to replace them (based off your pictures not a bad idea either). It can't hurt the performance, only help to get a new, clean one in there. That's my mentality anyway.

Gave the dealer the VIN's for both our V6's (05 and 07), 12204-31030 came back for both.

on a side note... the oem part number above for the v6 doesn't have the 90 bend in it. Just a straight peice for where the hose attaches.

One of the most overlooked maintenance items under the hood. This is how the engine oil burn off, vapors, blow by etc gets back into the combustion chamber. If the PCV valve gets clogged or the system is not working properly you will start developing a black oily varnish on the top end and then sludge.

Sorry to bump up a old thread but maybe you can help. I'm resisting the urge to start a new thread.

Will a clogged PCV create what a leak that looks like a rear man seal leak?

I have oil around the bellhousing area and the first shop I called recommended that I check the PCV valve first "because sometimes that can create pressure which pushes the oil pass the seal."

I was pleasantly surprised that he offered the tip. He quoted me $700 in labor to change the rear seal.

yes a clogged pcv would not allow the cranckcase to vent, pressurizing it and forcing fluids and gases out any way they can.

Just replaced mine yesterday, here is a pic of a 200K mile PVC valve. It was gummy but it still rattled like it was supposed to. Easy fix!
