4th Gen 4Runner Rear Brake Rotor and Pad DIY

I've seen many requests and questions for how to swap out the rear rotors so I snapped some pics when I did mine today.

I won't really delve into the pads because Joel @ Toyota120.com already did a good writeup. Replacing rear pads

Tools:
  • 17mm socket
  • Small flat head screwdriver
  • 2 8mmx1.25 bolts
  • hammer
  • torque wrench
  • floor jack
  • 2x jack stands
  • brake cleaner
  • brake grease
  • bungee cord

1. Jack up the truck (I used the rear axle housing as the jack point) and place 2 jack stands under the axle. Take off the wheels.

2. Using the 17mm socket, remove the brake calipers and hang them above the axle so you don't stress the brake lines. Using the same 17mm socket, unbolt the brake caliper bracket.

3. There are 2 holes in the rear rotors. Align the holes at 12 and 6 o'clock. Before trying to remove the rotors, you'll need to back off the parking brake shoes using the star adjuster nut. This is located at the 6 o'clock position - use a flashlight and make sure it's lined up correctly so you can fit the small screwdriver through the hole to the adjustment star. Adjust the star downward repeatedly until you're clear of the brake rotor.

4. Now you're ready to separate the rotor from the hub. There should be 2 threaded holes on the rotor. Add a little lubricant to the threads and insert the 2x 8mmx1.25 bolts. Tighten them down several turns working back and forth to pull off the rotor. I put a couple lug nuts on just so it wouldn't fly off when I gave it an extra whack or two with the hammer.

5. Spray down the entire assembly with brake cleaner. Clean up the hub a bit with a wire brush if it's beat up.

6. Slip the new rotor on. It may need a bit of encouragement using lug nuts and/or a rubber mallet.

7. Rebuild the caliper bracket with new pad guides and install the new pads. Don't forget the high temp grease on the back of the pads. Compress the caliper piston and bolt it back on the bracket. Re-grease the slide pins too.

8. Torque the caliper brackets, 17mm bolts to 77 ft/lbs.
Torque the caliper slide pin, 17mm bolts to 65 ft/lbs.

9. Now it's time to re-adjust the parking brake. Same as before, align the hole at 6 o'clock and using the small screwdriver, adjust the star wheel UPWARD until it tightens down. Then back it off a turn or so.

10. Re-install the wheel, throw on the lugs, get it back on the ground and torque the lug nuts.

11. Now go break in the new pads and enjoy your silent and smooth brakes!

Thanks, glad it will help out! I went with NAPA ultra premium rotors and AdaptiveOne pads. I've been running the same combo up front for the past 45k miles and they've been great.

Bookmarked as well, thanks for the writing, I didn't realize there were threaded hold for breaking the rotor loose.

Does anyone know of a writeup for replacing the parking brake pads? That must be a nightmare with as little room as it looks???

please use this guide for removal, do not beat it off if its stuck, just make sure the parking brake is off first, then do the star adjustment to loosen it and remove the rotor, once you check everything is good, put the new rotors in and then ajust the parking brake all the way tight, dont force it, then back a click or 2.

Any down side to those pads and rotors versus the stock toyota parts? I'm going to need to do all 4 of mine soon. Looking at the prices they are only about $5 different than ordering stock ones. Just curious.

Hey guys, I have a 08 sr5. Is this the correct kit for rotors? There's two different sizes, hence why I'm asking, thanks in advance!

I love the AdaptiveOne pads and rotors. I know a lot of folks swear by the OEM equipment too and I'm sure you can't go wrong either way. I haven't done a side by side comparison with new toyota pads and rotors but I'm very happy with my current setup.

I've used this guide today while working on my brakes .
very helpful and it wasn't that difficult .
took me around 4 hours .
so far my brakes are smooth now but the old one wasn't that bad .. left side went easily
with passenger side i had hard time to remove these 2 long bolts holding a caliper , one of them has a rust inside
and won't slide :/ one pad was around 80% second pad maybe 40% . Also rotor was not that bad . I guess my problem with shaking while braking was these pin bolts..
I remove the rubber and cleaned up surface inside the hole . Also I put the grease inside and reinstall rubber .
it's much better but still hard to slide the bolt inside .
I reinstall the caliper for now .
my question is could i get these rubbers and pins and reinstall them in a caliper brucket or i have to get whole new thing ?

second thing I hear some clunking noise while I drive slow between my neighborhood with windows rolled down . I thought worn pads causes these noises but I've install new brakes today and problem isn't solved

any suggestions ?

BTW sorry for my English I'm new in North america

Quick question. Is there any chance a rotor will come off without releasing the e-brake tension at the 6 o clock position of the disc? Or is it 100% guaranteed that you will have to play with it in order for the disc to come off?

When I did my rear brakes (about 6 weeks ago) I didn't really have to horse around with the brake assembly, with just a little tug they both came off. Everything looked like it was still in good shape as in the parking brake assembly

Hmm... I see some people did have to and others didn't. I wonder what the determining factor was.
Thanks anywhoo.
