Finally back in a 4Runner again, I have wanted another one ever since I sold my 99 several years ago. I had a 100 series for the past 6 months but the gas mileage was killing me... so I traded it in for an 07 SR5 V8 4WD.
Old 4Runner (5 speed, 35's, 1.5" lift, locked f&r):
New 4Runner (crappy pic, I'll upload a better one tomorrow):
I cant wait to start building it and get back to wheeling again. I'm eager to see if the 4th gen can be as capable as my old 3rd gen. First thing on the list is to take off the running boards, then maybe a cheap 1" spacer for the front, bigger tires and sliders. And I'd like to swap in some white LED's for the dash and gauges. I'll get a build thread eventually but I probably wont start modding for a few months.
I do have a few issues so far though, sorry if this post is long winded.
One of the main things that is driving me crazy is the reverse sensors. They are attached to something behind the dash that beeps ridiculously loud when backing up (and everytime I switch the car into reverse it beeps). The problem is, it starts beeping when I am about 10' away from something. Wayyyyy too sensitive. There are 4 sensors on the rear bumper that appear to be factory installed (I will upload a picture in the morning) but I dont think that was an option so I am guessing it was dealer installed. The obvious solution for this is to tear apart the dash and find the beeper and unplug it. Thats probably what I'll do - I am planning on adding a backup camera anyways.
The bigger issue is the alarm. It has the same remote as factory but I dont think it is the RS3200 (I have searched.) There is a red light to the left of the steering wheel next to the dimmer but it isnt a button. Every time I lock it beeps and honks, and when I unlock it beeps twice and honks twice. Very annoying. Does anyone have any idea what kind of alarm this could be and how I could go about turning of the honks or disabling the alarm?
Last thing - on my 3rd gen, I could leave the headlights switched on, turn off the vehicle, and once I got out and locked it with my remote - the headlights would turn off. The 4th gen doesnt have this feature. I am wondering if this is related to the alarm?
Thanks for any input.
