Shift column light out - bulb not issue?

So about two weeks ago my battery died and after jumping it I noticed that my shift column light was out. I looked over the other interior lights/cigarette outlet thinking I may have blown a fuse trying to start it with a dead battery but everything else seems to be fine. So I assumed that the bulb must have blown. After doing some research I came across a few sources saying that the shift column bulb was a #74. After pulling the bulb it did appear to be blown so I went down to Advanced Auto Parts and picked up a #74 bulb and tried plugging it in and it was too big. I went back to Advanced and looked at the other bulbs they had and found a #2721 that looked identical to the factory bulb and it did fit the socket however I'm still getting no light. So my question is, do I have the wrong bulb still or is there a fuse that I may not have seen? Could it be a short somewhere? Any help would be appreciated.

You might have put that 2721 in and fried it, you need to know what volt and watt buld to put in there.
I am not sure what it is with out looking it up.

Yeah that's what I'm wondering. It didn't look like it lit up at all but I've been looking everywhere for an exploded view of the center console and can't find anything. The bulb I pulled out originally had no numbering on it that I could find and actually had a little orange rubber condom over it that had basically melted onto it. I'm more worried that the socket itself has shorted or something.

get a multi-meter and check it. you can ohm out the bulb to verify of its good, and you can check the socket for power.
no more guessing.
