Those with aftermarket head units and JBL system

I am on year two of having my head unit and i believe its the wiring harness from when i swapped head units. I have the JBL system and have replaced all the speakers, aftermarket sub powered by a separate aftermarket amp. I am having an issue randomly, it sends the music through the sub instead of all my speakers. I will hear it just turn off, then ill hear my sub trying to play it then it will either come back to all the speakers and play like normal and/or i change songs and it will fix it. All the connections at the RCA harness i have for the JBL to aftermarket headunit box are tight and not messed up in any way.

Is anyone else having these issues? I hope i explained it good enough to understand. I basically think that aftermarket wiring box is going out.

This happens to mine occasionally too. It's like the interface doesn't power on and then I have to shut the truck off and turn it back on.

mine thankfully just takes a song change or itll come back on its own. I wonder if where it collects power is not a solid connection.

check the remote wire and make sure it gets a good 12v signal. bad ground can also cause this too.

I just recently gave up on using the JBL system with my aftermarket HU. The interface unit I had was crap and I read enough complaints online to believe there isn't a quality one available. Mine was randomly cutting off the signal to certain speakers. I put in components at each corner and an 8" sub in stock location with an amp under each front seat.

Absolutely amazed at the difference it made and as an added bonus no more sound cutting out.

What kind of interface are you using? I am using metra.. Seems to work fine.

However the steering control does not work.. Do you guys have steering wheel control interface? if so what brand?

With the way the starting system is designed in the 4th generation 4Runner you can actually just flip your key to the "start" position while it's still running. It won't engage the starter so you won't do any damage, but it will reset the stereo as if you'd shut it off and started it again.

It said axxess on it...I believe it was a Metra. I would hit bumps in the road and it would cut sound off to the front door speakers. Then if I banged on the dash in a certain spot sound would come back. Sometimes. All connections were tight, I figured it was a bad solder joint or something but I had long wanted to upgrade the sub so instead I just upgrade the whole system.

No doubt some people have zero issues with them, but I wasn't one of them. Metra isn't necessarily known for its quality so if I was the op, I would try a PAC TATO.

If it wasn't for all the JBL Pax/Metra stuff I'd have already changed my head unit by now. Seems like problems are just so common.

How hard is it just to rip it all out and replace with a new, simple, 4 speaker system?

Would replacing the JBL Amp & Sub at the same time as the Headunit eliminate these issues?

I don't need anything fancy or super loud, I mostly listen to podcasts and folk music off my ipod.

To be completely honest i've had great success from my aftermarket radio and since i've replaced everything but the JBL amp itself im happy with it. The issue i have is very random and maybe twice a month. Im in my car for 1300 miles a month so those are pretty good odds. It was the easiest swap i ever have done with the head unit as well. Dont hesitate, i hadnt had the issue someone else spoke of here but it also depends on the previous owner (if there was one) and how they hacked up their wiring.

Im pretty sure I installed it correctly since its only 3 wires.. However daigram on axxess/metra site is incorrect for limited with nav.

Any help would be appreciated.

The metra stereo interface works fine for me but the steering one does not..

Dont mean to thread jack OP. But im pretty frustrated. I think evertones issue is in all to do with the interface.. I installed system before and never had issues with direct amps.

I only connected 2 wires, 1 for remote and 1 for ground, and it programmed without me doing anything. I remember that the directions that came with it were impossible and I had to google the correct wire to use

This was the direction I got and followed it precisely. I even spent time with tech support and found the the harness pin in the pic is reversed.

I dont see how you can get power to the module with connecting 2 wires..
