Wheel swap from another vehicle?

I apologize if this is an odd question, but I have been searching for days and I can't seem to find the answer.....it is driving me crazy.

When I first bought my 4runner about a year ago, I read on a tire thread somewhere that a cheap way to upgrade to bigger wheels and tires was to swap from another vehicle. The problem is, I can't remember the size or vehicle people were referring to. As it was described, people who buy a certain vehicle (maybe jeep Rubicon?) often immediately ditch their wheels and tires and sell them cheap on craigslist. As I recall, there were a number of people who had done this, and they were very happy with the results.

Does this sound familiar to anyone, or did I just make this up?

Thanks in advance.

I'm presuming you have a 4th gen, 4runner.
You can certainly run wheels from other vehicles IF THEY FIT.
1st the lug pattern & number has to match (6 lug by 5.5).
Also you need to know what minimum size rim you need (16" or 17"). The Sport editions & SOME Limiteds have larger rotors requiring a 17" min. wheel.
Our Toyota wheels are HUBcentric and I'd recommend you stay with that style.
Many TOYOTA wheels are direct fit (Tacoma's, FJ Cruisers, GX470s, 5th gens, etc.
If you want to stay with Toyota wheels, monitor ebay, craigslist, and specific forums for the model you're looking for. People are always selling their factory wheels. Good Luck!

I bought 2014 TE wheels and tires off of a member here who did exactly what you are describing, bought the truck, took off the wheels and tires to upgrade and sold me the factory wheels and tires.

I went from 2003 sport wheels and tires to 2014 TE wheels and tires. Though the tires are the same make, they are larger. so are the wheels. if this is what you are talking about, then yes it is possible and is done quite a bit.

if you are talking about getting wheels and tires off of another brand, like Jeep, then I'm not positive, but I'm sure any tire shop or short internet search could give you the info you are looking for as to what specific opposing brand will fit your vehicle.

hope this helps, and for the record, I LOVE the larger TE wheels and tires on my 2003....but thats my .02
