2005 Tach stopped working

2005 4runner V-8 4wd

Well the tach stopped working. I have been hearing a whining noise while driving for a little while. So I take the gauge cluster out, moved the needle around, check the connections and seems ok. So I reinstalled the cluster and the tach works but not the fuel gauge. Disconnect the gauge cluster from the wiring harness and reconnect. Everything works fine and no noise on the first test drive. Come back turn the engine off and then back on. Tach not working again. Weird thing is after I turn the 4runner off, the tach and speedometer hum and vibrate a bit like there is some stored energy going through them. I am thinking loose or poor connection so I will be going back through it when I get some time and clean the wiring harness to gauge cluster. What should I use. Any one else run into this issue?

check this thread:

Instrument Cluster Help

You might have a bad "gauge motor" (stepper motor).

Another option is to get another cluster (fleabay). Just make sure the options (V6 vs. V8, air suspension, SR5/Sport/Limited) on your 4R are the same as the donor 4R cluster.

Good luck!

I found 1 but they were asking $175. Tanin Auto emailed me back within 5 mins. The part is $20 plus shipping. I will try that first. Thanks!

I just had the SAME exact thing happen to me yesterday on my 2005 V6 4x4, No Tach. I pulled the dash fuse this morning to see if that was OK and it was good- started up this morning and had this clicking mechanical sound in the dash, no gauges... Pushed in further on the fuse under the dash I think it is and everything sprung to life except the tach...

Odometer works fine (82K)

Does this too sound like the stepper motor for the tach? or something else?
Yesterday was the coldest day this year so far, around 0 when I started the truck, and as I drove to work I was thinking how I've never needed an extended warranty bla bla bla, Totally jinxed myself

If the tach isn't working and is "clicking", then what else can it be? I"d try the stepper motor in the link above and try that.

Seems my other gauges are intermediate now.. Does the dash have a stepper motor for each gauge? or does this one control the other functions too?

Each guage needle has its own motor as each has its own independent function.
