rear defroster and wiper not working

seems strange that both the rear wiper and rear windshield defroster did not work this morning when they both worked previously. It was minus 12 degrees out though. Are they related with a fuse that may be out?

roll the window all the way down then all the way back up, see if that fixes it

I came on to ask the same question after neither worked after replacing my battery. I rolled the window down and up, tried it again, and everything worked again - defrost, wiper, washer, auto window switch.

Very coincidental I came on here for this exact problem! This worked as simple as it sounds. I already looked at the fuses, so I didn't know what was next. This is why this forum makes life easier! Thanks!!!

Almost any time you do battery work you have to reset that stuff by rolling the window all the way down then all they way back up. Its a mystery to everyone the first time they do it.

thats the main reason of being a member of this forum.i had the same problem and i found out about it before going to dealer to change oil,i asked them if they can take a look at it while its there for me.

they said my rear wiper motor broke down and i need a new one,250$ for motor and 150$ labor.

i came on the forum ,read what might be the problem and bang,it works without any repair.

i love this and rsw forum .

thanks a lot guys

it worked! I didnt know if the rear window was only brought half way down and up that it would disable the wiper and defroster? I brought it all the way down and sure enough everything works like normal. strange design!

I love the internet! I was freaking out this morning that the defrost and wiper weren't working. I thought I broke a wire or something when installing my stereo and found this. Quick fix. Thanks.

This is why I love message boards. Major PITA when rear wiper doesn't work in the winter-easy fix! Thanks!

Thanks for posting the solution, same problem here. 2006 4runner SR5, rolling all the way down and up brought the wiper and defroster back to life.

I think is due to ECM needing to "re-learn" the upper and lower limits for safety and automatic reasons. You will have to do same to driver side window and the moon roof.

Just a little community ALERT.

There has been more of these 4th gens, as they age, having a problem. When you turn on the rear window defrost the back window explodes!

I believe members here have tracked it down to the plug at the window, to the defrost, shorts out.

Just a heads up moving into the colder season.
