Heated Steering Wheel

Is there any way to install a heated steering wheel in a 4th gen? Has anyone done it?

I asked about it in another thread, and it turns out the part from the GX is insanely expensive. Plus, no one knows if the wiring for it is there.

Yeah, like $2400 for a GX460 heated wheel and another $233 for the heater control assembly.

And it only heats part of the wheel. How Did Lexus Mess Up a Heated Steering Wheel? - KickingTires

You could try a heated steering wheel cover, but they get mediocre reviews on Amazon. You might be better off rigging something up on your own, or adding a resistive heater to blow warm air on your hands. Apparently some Lexus models have a resistive heater to generate heat in the cabin right away.

Looks like it comes on some Hybrids, which makes sense since they don't generate much heat in electric mode, and since they have electricity to spare.

Wow 2400! Forget that. I don't think the 03-09 GX had a heated steering wheel did it?

Man if this could be figured out for a reasonable price I'd be all in, especially since i don't have heated seats. Thats the best thing about driving my moms car is the heated steering wheel..and it heats up almost instantly.

I believe it was first offered on the GX460 starting in 2010, not the GX470 sold from 2003-2009.

A block heater might be a good option since it helps you get heat much faster on cold days (plus helps the engine work more efficiently with less wear at startup). Or you could put a space heater in the car and run the cord out the window and plug it in (though it's slightly dangerous). Or hard wire a big inverter and plug the space heater into that (you need something like a 150A DC circuit to run a space heater. Or park in a heated garage, or get heated gloves.

If you have a 400W power outlet that you can use while driving, you could get a couple of these 200W space heaters and aim them at your hands.

But I think the 4th gen inverter only puts out 100W, and the cigarette lighter is only good for about 10A or 120W.

I would wrap resistive wire around the steering wheel, but I can't think of a good way to run power to it. The thing that normally does is called a clock spring, but it seems unlikely that there would be room for a second one inside the housing.

Maybe something like

glued under the steering wheel. But it could be a safety issue if it gets stuck.
