Great info and glad to hear Toyota is covering this. Now I can comfortably use my rear defroster.

*until 2018 when the warranty ends. Then, if it hasn't shattered yet, you'll have to live in fear!

And even if (when?) it shatters under warranty, it'll still be a pain to have it shatter then need replacing.

Read carefully. Unless I'm misunderstanding what i read, it seems that most of us early model owners are out of luck on this as it states 9 years on secondary coverage. I don't see how anyone could still be covered under the primary warranty coverage on a 03-09 vehicle in 2017... Most of us would qualify for the secondary coverage with ends at 9 years...Ive unplugged my rear defroster as a precaution. I would hate to have the damn thing shatter in the middle of a rainstorm or snowstorm. Just not worth the risk for me...

I disagree, it says the Primary Coverage is extended passed the normal 3 years until April 03, 2018 and then says after the "Primary Coverage ends", i.e. after April 30, 2018, then the Secondary Coverage kicks in, so if your glass breaks after April 30, 2018 your are covered if it has been less than 9 years since it was put into service, i.e. purchased new from a Toyota dealer.

"• The Primary Coverage offers warranty enhancement until April 30, 2018, regardless of mileage.
• After the Primary Coverage ends, the Secondary Coverage is applicable for 9 years from the date of first use with no mileage limitation."

This was more or less the same wordage used for the dash replacement except the Secondary was 10 years and my dash on my 2004 was covered which was 12 years old at the time of inspection of my dash and I now have a new dash.

When I had my rear glass replaced back a couple years ago, all the light bulbs (license 3rd brake) were burnt out as well. I rarely rolled the back window down or used the defroster but had the glass tinted. But after shelling out $$ I just vowed never to use it again. Glad to hear it might not have been a "user error"

Didn't I just make a thread about the TSB and the warranty enhancement on this a week ago? lol

TSB-0189-17 "Rear Hatch Glass Shattered"

It was specifically for you guys to reference! :P

"Secondary Coverage" only applies after the primary expires in 2018 and is for the most part meaningless since it rules out all the vehicles anyways. It's the same weird crap they do such as the TSB stating what bumper to bumper warranty coverage is... despite the TSB being released over a decade since the first 4th gen hit the streets.

I've never actually used the rear defroster to defrost the rear window, only to defrost the front mirrors. I looked quickly and didn't see where I could unplug the rear defroster. Would you mind sharing where the plugs are so I can unplug it?

If you pull the rear hatch panel and roll the window down a bit, you'll see two white connectors in the right side of the glass. Carefully remove them and secure them out of he way of the mechanisms after taping up the connector ends.
