The 4runner would run like crap if you let it sit for 30 minutes before. It’s been 4 days and no starting issues any more. No check engine lights and no rough running. Fingers crossed but I think I bought myself some time. I’ll report back if the problem reoccurs.

I am also not a regular consumer of snake oil, but when this head gasket issue happened to me, I used BARS head gasket fix (1111) that I purchased from Advance Auto. There was someone either earlier in this thread or maybe another forum that had used this with good results. I used this product about 20k miles ago and its worked so far. My truck has a bunch of rust, dings, scrapes, etc. No way I can justify a $3k repair...

For this type of HG leak, these products can work very well. I used to run Land Rover Discoverys before I got my 4th gen, and a product called Kseal got great reviews. Disco IIs always had some sort of coolant issues and this stuff worked very well and buying some time (usually years or more). IF a proper fix does not make financial sense, why not...

Looks to be the consensus that the HG issue was more or less resolved in the 06 and up years? I am looking at an 06 4wd V6 and I've been up half the night contemplating it. This thread is giving me pause...
edit: build date 07/06, should be in the clear?

OEM Toyota would definitely be my first choice.
If used plenty of FelPro Head gaskets without issue. 2nd choice

It should be well in the clear with that build date.

It went better than I thought. I planned to keep it until about 400k. Brother in law owns a shop and bought it from me. I ended up with a new TRD Pro 4 Runner.

In the same boat!
2004 v6 sr5 2wd
253,000
Bought the truck and drove 600 miles then it overheated out of nowhere and I found no coolant in radiator. Changed cap because overflow wasn't suctioning and no luck. Took it to a shop soon after, knowing it was probably hg because rough starts in the morning, after it sat for 3 days at their shop there was so much coolant in a cylinder it wouldn't fire at all.
So I'm into the rebuild!
Its all been posted before but just so people keep seeing the right info...

I cant find in a search any tips or trick to depressurize fuel system. Is it just disconnect rubber lines from hard lines by brake res and let em spray?

I didn’t want to wait for the stop leak to wear off or worry about taking time off work for the repair. Ended up going for the big head gasket fix. By bye 4th gen. My daughter cried when we traded it in.

2 years in
Hello folks , I replaced my HG about 2 years ago & like so many others on here love my 4Runner but really had to roll the dice on a major & expensive repair, luckily thanks 100% totally to this thread which I'd read every single post I did not spend one cent on plugs, coils etc. then prior to the repair I rationalized the project simply by multiplying a monthly car payment (low side) $300 x 12months = $3600 . So I figured if I can sneak
A year out of repaired HG anything over is a wash on a $2400 repair on a vehicle that I know & trust. 2 years in & no problems(knock on wood)
I do return to this thread periodically & feel for all the people in the same situation as me.
Good luck & I hope by sharing my experience may help someone decide what to do
