'06 XSP to Mall Crawler Build Thread (PICS)

Current status:

So, when my mother passed she left me her 2006 4Runner, SR5 (XSP for those who know what that is). It's 2WD and while I wasn't stoked to own it (I owned a 2006 S2000 and '94 YJ Wrangler) it was nice to have a comfortable SUV to drive around. My S2000 was on the floor and my Wrangler was up in the sky, so, this one was just right for getting groceries.
Long story short, I got tired of paying insurance on 3 vehicles and wasn't about to sell the one my mother had left me... so I kept it and sold the other two. Well, it's 2WD... but that doesn't change the fact that I take it out to no man's land more often than I should. Then again, I drive it on the street even more. So on order is a set of 285/75/16 Adventuro AT2s and some 16" steel wheels from Pro Comp. Also a set of 1.25" spacers and a 3"/2" leveling kit to help fit 'em underneath. Seeing as how I'm totally incapable of sitting and waiting for stuff to arrive, I started tearing down the front end to participate in the famous black headlight mod (BHLM henceforth). SO! Pics so far:

I got a 3000K HID kit for my fogs and 5000K HID kit for my headlights (I wanted a 4300K but they didn't have any):

I also painted the very center chrome portion of the grille (just some plastidip to see if I liked it):

DURING:

AFTER:

And here's a pic of my S2K and bobber project of that time:

I also went ahead and replaced every bulb with its LED counterpart. Interior, reverse lights, tag lights... did NOT do the dash lights and the very complex ones though. I also followed an easy write-up on doing the fog light mod as it drove me NUTS that I couldn't run my fogs without the headlights being on (which by the way, Toyota, completely defeats the purpose of fog lights). I really haven't had much time off... had today off, so, as stated above I'm going to town on the headlights. Will also dismantle the grille and paint the remaining chrome in high gloss black (but leaving the center matte black). This should hold me off until I do the satoshi grill mod. Also, UPS just stopped by with my 285/75R16s.

As far as the BHLM; I went ahead and took down the front bumper cover. I wanted to do a nice, clean tuck-away job of the ballasts of the HID kits. As per usual I use industrial strength Velcro from Walmart to mount them. This stuff is TOUGH. Ran it on multiple motorcycles and cars in the past and the heat of the engine bay has never been close to damaging the glue and/or Velcro (not even my boosted toys of the past heat-soaking in Miami's moist sauna weather).

So I'll post some pics after I'm done painting the headlights. Thank you all for the information and inspiration!

It's time to hit the oven!

Okie dokie! Here's the updates. I destroyed one of my headlights after painting it. Everything was fine and dandy and then it looked like rain (I live in Miami... it always looks like rain). I took my headlight into the house to dry after its second and final coat of paint and I dropped it on the floor. I ordered an eBay set of headlights after that. I also felt like the plastidip on the center portion of the grille would look better if the outter chrome portion were gloss black, so I sprayed it. Installed my new headlights. My leveling kit came in 3" front 2" rear. My Pro Comp 16" D window style wheels came in and I got all of it put on.

Before and after of the front end:

The grille just sprayed:

The Front after the lift/tires:

My Wheels/Tires: (16x8 Pro Comp Series 52 16x8, 6x5.5; offset: 12mm, 4" backspacing + 1.25" spacers to clear the brakes)

Thanks! Your build is much of my inspiration! ...and this guy abecker_89 on Instagram. Running the same black, steel, D-window wheels I ran on all of my Wranglers on the Runner thanks to him. His specs are on point.

Bump

Next on the list is a roof rack so I can mount my spare up there (definitely doesn't fit under the vehicle) and then some light bars, big and small. Perimeter lights for sure. After that... maybe I'll start figuring out a supercharger build.

I did the center section of my '07 SE Titanium, looks like yours. I stepped away and then did the lower center section. consider that, it ties it all together. Your build looks great!

Thanks guys! ran, you have a pic so I can see what you mean? You mean the sectioned off piece at the bottom of the front bumper? I've seen that painted black before on instagram and I thought it looked nice.

Yes, the sectioned off bottom piece. I cleaned up after doing the grill, and looked like it needed it to match/tie it all together. Long list of upgrades still to do. enjoy
