Hello...I am looking at a used 4runner for my sister and was wondering if anyone subsribes to carfax...maybe you could run a VIN for me? Just trying to save her a few bucks! Thanks!

I dont have one but found a sneaky way of running a VIN on a 4Runner...

Many Toyota dealers (in the Bay Are at least) subscribe and allow you to run VINs through Carfax from the car's listing on their website. Just go to a dealer site and click on the carfax link for a 4runner, then in the URL change the VIN number to that of another 4Runner you wanna check, et voila! Most of the time it works. Only on a couple of occasions it didn't work and you get routed to the Free "record check" instead.

I had a very poor experience with Carfax. They work so hard to make something look official which really isn't even worth the email it is sent on.

To "test" the service, my friends and I put in VINs of cars with varying amounts of past damage. Absolutely NOTHING came up for ANY of our trial runs. Keep in mind these were all vehicles registered in Canada; maybe carfax doesn't check Cdn records very well. On the upside, each and every car in Canada is required to report damages over "X" amount, so the info is out there. You are better off (in Canada) just finding out what province the vehicle is from and calling the local provincial insurance branch. Sometimes you have to pay a nominal amount.

I requested a refund from Carfax, but they denied me with various reasons and rational.

So best of luck...you are right to save the money - just don't bother!

I agree with you jacal. I'm in California and had a friend of mine run a report for one of my cars after I been in an accident. Clean title, no accidents. IMO, the best way to know for sure is to get a Carfax report AND have the car inspected by a reputable mechanic for any type of repair work.

I guess the only useful thing in my mind is that it did a good job of listing WHERE the vehicle had been registered. That allows a person to then call the local provincial insurance. It was also nice to have the dates of *when* it was registered, gives an iron clad year. I'd skip it in the future tho.

Carfax is a scam! I ran two used cars that I bought in the last 5 years and both came up with repetative (exactly the same) service locations! I knew both owners and know for a fact that they had moved several times and taken the cars to different garages in that period. Save your money for a good tune up when you buy the car and DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK before you buy!
