What kind of lube do you use? :moon:

It's time for my V8 Sport Edition 4Runner to have the diff's and transfer case's lubes replaced. Dealer wants $100 per unit, and call me crazy, but $300 for that job is a bit...umm....ridiculous.

Can someone on here tell me which is the best brand and weight I should purchase?

Oh, and how much for each unit?

Thanks in advance!

Great! Thanks!

Any idea how many quarts for the entire job? Both diff's and the transfer case?

It's in the manual:
What kind of lube do you use? :moon:-screen-shot-2015-03-12-7-54-15-pm-png

I think 75W-90 is only available in synthetic or synthetic blend.

I don't think 90W or 80W are available any more, but 80W-90 should be fine. 75W-90 might work too?

I read somewhere that it's bad to use synthetic in a differential that calls for conventional because it will cause it to leak, but I can't imagine how that would be true?

Lighter oil like 75W-90 might improve gas mileage slightly and should work better in cold weather.

The transfer case has a Torsen differential, so I would stick with what it calls for. I don't think any friction modifiers are necessary since it doesn't really use friction, but I guess it doesn't hurt if it's in there? Or so they say.

For the front and rear I can't imagine it matters much. It's weird that the V6 front calls for 75W-90, but the V8 front calls for 90W and has a slightly lower capacity. Are they different?

I use Royal Purple for everything. F/R diff., trans. case, engine and coolant. I also only use a RP or K&N oil filter. I wouldn't recommend it if you have high mileage. And if you decide to use it make sure it has Synerlec.

If you watch for Advance Auto coupons you can buy Royal Purple online and pick up in store at a deep discount.
http://www.retailmenot.com/view/adva....com?c=4342826
At the time there online system even let me place multiple orders for pickup so you can maximize your discount. I did 2-3 orders getting me 40% the original price of gear oil.

That discount is great. I'll get some Mobil 1 with it.

Here's an old DIY including crush washer part numbers.
