Does 4th Gen 4Runner = Land Cruiser 5 ?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I prefer the magazines I get from England. I find the articles (and writing) a lot more interesting than those I read here. Their perspective seems to match mine.

The problem in reading foreign magazines is that vehicle models can differ from country to country. Am I right in assuming that the Land Cruiser 5 is the same as the 4th Generation 4Runner and Lexus GX? If so, 4 Drive just rated the Toyota as the best of the bunch in their December issue.

What a shame that we can't get the diesel engines found over there. VW may change all that for the rest of us.

The GX470 is almost identical to the european Land Cruiser Prado. The only difference is the front end styling, taillights and a bit less fancy interior.

The 4Runner, GX, LCPrado all have identical mechanicals and built on the same assembly line in Japan.

The only mechanical difference is that the 4Runner has an electronic dial for the t-case (which NA buyers prefer) and the LC/GX has a lever.

Sweaty Palms Video

Searching Prado, I found the South Africa site. They have a Gallery section with a Prado TV commercial. My palms are still sweating after watching this one. Try this link, if it does not work go to Products, then Prado, then Gallery. Big download, but well worth it.

That's a great find! I wish they would do that same commercial with the 4R, they would sell tons more than they already do

RL, great site...very informative!

Just in case anyone missed it:

For the Prado:

Angle of approach = 33

Angle of departure = 28

Breakover angle = 27

Incline = 42 degrees

Sideway = 42 degrees

Water Depth = 700 mm = 27.5 inches

Cool stuff!

EDIT: I believe that the BREAKOVER angle on the 4runner is less (24-25 degrees, rather than 27).

According to Toyota, the 4runner has these numbers:

Approach angle = 32 degrees
Departure angle = 24 degrees
Breakover angle = 22 degrees

The approach angle is very similar to Prado...maybe different bumper design??

The departure angle is very different...maybe due to spare tire and hitch?? (Prado carries the spare outside the cargo door, NOT underneath like in 4runner.)

The breakover angle is also different. I don't know why. I haven't had the chance to check out the fuel capacity between Prado and 4runner. I wonder if this may be due to a bigger fuel tank in the 4runner???? Could it be that the Prado have taller springs, resulting in higher body (but ground clearance stays the same due to identical axle height)??

Another possibility is that Toyota is not accurate with the figures...that is, different regions of the world measure it differently.

I don't know.

The Prado is air adjustable suspension.

Although it shares the frame with the 'Runner, the body style, standard equipment and options are quite different.

This from the motherland.

Yup, that would explain the difference in breakover angle.

Thanks.
