I was quoted $1065 from a dealership in Little Rock today, that was more than just the belt. He recommended a coolant flush for an extra $190, I believe. I'm at 103xxx miles in mine, and in July my wife and I are driving up to Cleveland with our 7 month old to see her family. That's really why I'm wanting to don't right now. I'd hate for it to break on our trip.
How do you tell when it's going bad? Are there any signs in how the truck runs or sounds to let you know it's wearing?

No. The truck won't have any issues until the belt breaks and then it's bad news. Call around and ask service managers for their best price. No good reason they won't compete for your business.

Why are they wanting an extra $190.00 bucks for a flush? 95% of the coolant when they do the timing belt. The timing belt cost should already include the coolant and thermostat.

I just bought a 2006 Limited V8 with 172000 km ( 103200 m ). I had the Toyota dealer agree to do the timing belt and water pump as part of the deal before I even went to look at the vehicle. They also have to install a new actuator as it wouldn't go into 4 low during the test drive despite my trying all the tricks except for hitting it with a block of wood and hammer. They are just waiting for the actuator parts to come in so hopefully it will be available by the end of the week.

When I was living in the LR area, I avoided the toyota stealerships like the plague. Did not trust them, and they were always priced very high. When I had my first timing belt changed, I had it done at Foster's garage in LR. If I remember correctly, it was around $750. That also included changing out the pump and tensioner. I don't remember if I had them do anything else.
The biggest thing for me is trust. I trust them to work on my vehicles. I only wish I could find a shop like that here in Texas.

As messed up as it is, a lot of the price is not always even the dealer, but it comes down to the service writer as well. My brother in law (disclaimer I do NOT agree with what he does, and have told him that) works at Honda, he will change the labor rate depending on the customer. Come in with a 2000 Accord and struggling, you will likely get a good labor rate, (there rate is $110) or even discounted as he feels bad for you. If he can tell you have money or for some other reason he may choose he ups the labor rate to as much as $150 a hour.
Other things to ask are what exactly you getting charged for, he also tells stories of discounting labor to make customers happy, but then charges them for something already included in the overall job as a seperate charge to make the money back. Paying for a timing belt job and want a discount? Sure have the discount, and pay extra for the new serpentine belt to be installed
All im saying is be careful who you trust. Sometimes you can even call back and ask for a different advisor and get a different price at the same dealer. That being said, as much as we love our 4Runners, there not new anymore. Any competent shop should easily be able to perform a timing job on our trucks. The ASIN kit (same as OEM) is $180 shipped off Amazon. Throw in 5 hours labor (not sure what actual book time is, but I can't imagine more than 5) at $100hr (average cost of a good independent shop in the NW), coolant and your at $700.

Awesome, they have 5 stars out of 18 reviews on Google. I'll give them a call on Monday and see what they say. Do they use OEM parts? If not, is there a downside to using non OEM?

I just did this job on our '05 last fall, using these parts from RockAuto Parts Catalog. *Buy the parts and have the shop quote the install....that's what I would do if you don't want to tackle it yourself. *You will see that I did the serpentine belt and tensioner too, you don't have to, but I am in the "already in there, might as well...." camp. *I also did plugs and radiator hoses too. *One more recommendation....buy the Toyota Super Long Life Coolant. *It's like $20 / gallon from the stealer, but it's good insurance for head gaskets! *

It was around 6 or 7 years ago for me, but as I remember, I bought the h2O pump, t-belt, and tensioner from an online source like 1sttoyotaparts or something, bought the long life coolant locally at a dealer, then had them order anything else from their parts place (hoses etc).
Overall I believe the price was around $750. Of course, prices may have gone up some, but regardless, I wish I was back in that area to have them do my belt again!
Even if you don't get all oem parts, find out what their warranty is and it may not even matter, quite frankly. A lot of people swear by oem. Obviously there are cheap aftermarket parts, but you'll be hard pressed to convince me that an oem t-belt or serpentine belt is any better than say, a gates. I'm not going to go out on a tangent here, but you should feel confident with that shop I mentioned. They will get it done right.
