Its not going into gear or anything, just letting the pump run for a few seconds at a time and replacing that amount.

& the pan holds ~3.5 qts so nothing ever goes "dry."

It never runs dry. Thats the point of only purging two qts at a time. This method is tried and true.

I just did the proceedure on mine. I used a paperclip as a jumper for the temp check, added an inline filter too.
It felt like it was shifting better instantly, I could tell the difference pulling out of the driveway.

I used the auxilary ATF cooler to pump out old fluid on the left side and pump in new fluid on the right side. I got this info here @ 13min into the video.

For Sale: leftovers from this project. One (1) quart unopened ATF WS Fluid, a 2 foot section of 3/8" ID tubing, used milk jug with markings, fluid pump (already primed with Toyota ATF haha), 20 gauge wire. For the low low price of $12 plus shipping cost from 02111 zip code.

I also changed the ATF on my 2005 4 runner. But, I used a valvoline transmission fluid that says its compatible with WS.
Is that ok or was I only supposed to use toyota WS for the transmission fluids change?

Many have used Valvoline Maxlife with it seems good results.

That's been discussed at length on this forum... try doing a search on Valvoline Maxlife.
The short answer is that there are two deeply divided camps. One camp feels that either there is no difference, or the differences don't matter.
The much longer answer is in this thread https://www.toyota-4runner.org/1818330-post1.html
:-)
Enjoy!

yes its ok to use & happy to hear you used the correct WS fluid in your 2005 4runner that came new with WS...
maxlife is excellent fluid & rated to use in WS transmissions just like any other modern universal fluid like amsoil, redline, etc. its also full synthetic & will stand up to abuse & heat better than WS that has been stated is not synthetic, but regardless of that maxlife is perfectly fine to use, myself & countless other members here & toyota vehicles out there have used it with good results. my 08 V6 is shifting great after 2+ years of doing a full exchange with maxlife. i have also used it for 10+ years in my last daily driver jeep cherokee & many miles & drag race use in high horsepower muscle cars.
of course there are naysayers & haters that will google up a couple of negative reports out of millions of users, but so far none of them actually prove maxlife caused any issues. theres one example posted on a couple threads here recently where a guy with a old & high mile gm vehicle claims it caused a problem but the info provided in no way proves it was the fluid, the trans was having other issues prior to using it & 9 out of 10 people replying to his thread said it was not the fluid.
use it without worry, just be sure you check the fluid levels the right way on the sealed WS trans.

I agree with firebirdguy. I did a full exchange with MaxLife, and noted a slight shift improvement. Drained WS fluid was still looking good after 100K miles on it. After 8000 miles on MaxLife, I highly recommend it.

Think of it this way. If you only change it once every 100,000 miles, are you really saving anything by using a cheaper ATF? I swapped mine for AMSOIL ATF at $140/10qt jug. I probably wont own it for another 100k miles but Im confident I also wont have transmission issues either. Which is really the point. You can save $40 on ATF but at the risk of future tranny problems.
My guess, the people who use maxlife or some other fluid dont plan to keep it for 10 years. It will be someone else's problem. LOL. I could be wrong. But I would be mistaken.
If you want to prolong the life of the trans, add a cooler so the fluid get no hotter than 170*F and add a Magnefine filter in the cooler line so the fluid stays clean.

yes. thanks all of you guys for good feedback.
I just bought this truck. changed all the fluids and spark plugs also dutifully.
I asked the dealer and I think they just changed the conventional engine oil .
Do I need to flush out all that oil If i want to put 5 w 30 synthetic engine oil in the next oil change?

absolutely no need to flush anything. synthetic oil is fully compatible with conventional... think about the "blend" oils out there, they are literally synthetic combined with conventional.
as for the "cheaper fluid" thing, maxlife may cost a little less than other brands but it is not cheap in any way. valvoline products are top quality & compete with or even beat other higher priced brands in some ways. maxlife is 100% synthetic base oil & has excellent anti shudder & friction modifier additives. there are lots of analysis done on valvoline products & they prove its an excellent fluid. i realize each person has their favorite brands & im not knocking any of them, but there is nothing to show valvoline isnt as good as most other top level brands.
& i do plan to keep my 4runner for 10+ years, when i do another ATF change in 60-80k miles i will use maxlife again with full confidence that its a quality product. i service many other cars of my family & friends besides my own 4 vehicles & have used maxlife in GM, toyota, honda & jeep/chrysler vehicles with zero issues.

Did this today, utilizing the experience of many others in this thread. Gravity filled using a rig I made with a skinny funnel and 3/8 vinyl tubing. Didn't drain the pan as I didn't have a way to measure, just pulled the line at the trans cooler at the front of the radiator. 2 quarts at a time, before I even got to 11 quarts I was getting much better looking fluid and the final 2 (I did 12.5) came out looking brand new by the end.
I think it shifts better, I dunno for sure. It's ridden a couple of hundred miles on the road and a few miles on rocks and is still gold so I assume it's G2G.
I used authentic WS fluid. I believe in using the product that the transmission was engineered to use. No hate towards anyone who feels otherwise.

Thank you very much for this. I have never owned let alone serviced an automatic. It all went well, start and stop every 2 quarts.
The only snag came at the end, I really don't like this "wait until it slows to a trickle" method Toyota devised after too much sake - what was wrong with a dipstick.
I forgot to put a fresh washer on the level check plug, had to take it out again, and I lost about 300ml of fluid. The engine was off so I assume it settles back into the oil pan when that happens. Not happy with that.
However, the fluid that came out while flushing did not smell of anything in particular, and certainly not burned. It was just a little dark. I actually saved some for an analysis, one thing I learned about from American forums like this. (Over here, people generally don't care about things like that)
I'll post up the results if anyone would like to see them. 60894 miles
