Valve adjustments

I have a friend that has a 99 4runner that has some valve noise dose anyone know the specs or even what kind of valve they are. I have heard that they are self adjusting

Hydraulic valves are self adjusting. Not sure if the 99 has hydraulic valves.

You're best bet for help on a 3rd gen 4runner probably isn't going to be in a forum dedicated to the 4th generation models.

You might want to ask the guys in the 3rd generation forum.

Pretty sure they are the bucket-over-valve design like most of the older Toyota engines. Each cam lobe has to be measured at cold temp for the gap between the cam lobe and the top of the bucket. If it's too loose, then the bucket will need to be changed for a 'taller' one. If it's too tight, then it'll be changed to a 'shorter' one.

My 95 Tacoma had the 2.7L I4. It had the shim-over-bucket design where you would replace the shim instead of the entire bucket. I don't know if they kept that design all the way to 99.
