5th Gen Calipers

Did my first brake job on my truck since buying her new. Since I joined this forum, never really contributed much and just roamed so now I can finally do it. I noticed many of us have the dreaded seized caliper issues and not wanting to deal with this problem again, decided to do some research and took the leap on buying 5th gen calipers, front rotors and pads.

Front and rear calipers are direct fit / bolt on.
Rotors fit without modifications
4th and 5th gen 4Runners share the same brake pads

Calipers are almost identical. Each pistons are 3mm larger
Rotors are 13.30". Only difference with the rotors are the fronts are thicker meaning less chances of rotor warping and better cooling

At the same time I replaced all 6 brake flex hoses with stainless steel extended lines and Dot 4 brake fluid

Now I just got to figure out how to upload multiple pictures

Other than that, brake power increased but the best is not having to deal with seized brake calipers.

What is the size difference in the calipers? Are we gonna be able to fit 16'' wheels or only 17''?

I was under the impression that the 5th gen Calipers are the "Sport" Calipers on the 4th gens... Honestly never bothered to look, but how are they different?

Only difference I noticed was the brake caliper piston which were 3mm larger resulting in increased braking power.
Caliper size was very close. Maybe a few mm bigger?

The biggest difference will be no more seized calipers. I haven't seen any 5th gen guys having issues with seized caliper issues since 2010.

I would say 17" wheels are minimum size to fit the brakes (Same as 4th generation sport and limited)

I will get back with the extended stainless steel brake lines part numbers I used later today

Thanks for the writeup! I'm about to do mine and I need to do calipers because I think i have the common frozen caliper issue.

Are these a direct bolt up. Anything you needed to do for the install other than normal? Do the brake lines need to be done or will the old work? Also where did you get the caliper's from, part #?

I'm very interested in this because so many have had the 'frozen caliper' issue and this could be a good solution

Yes they are a direct bolt up.

No special tools required.

Brake flex hoses are optional
