After market HU and back up camera recommendations
Hey all,
Sorry for starting a new thread, I'm a new 4runner owner and new to T4R. There is so much info and so many threads that I'm having trouble finding the answer to my question.
We just got out of our subaru and into a 2006 4runner SR5 that was babied by it's previous owner. We are loving it and I'm looking to make a few mods. For my first mod I went and switched out all the interior lights to LEDs.
Now I'm wanting to swap out the HU for one that would allow me to install a backup camera (with two little ones running about my wife would love something like this). Has anyone heard anything or had any experience with HU's like these?
Toyota in Dash Stereo Car DVD Player GPS Navigation iPod Radio Camera Black US | eBay
Double 2 DIN Universal Car DVD FM Am Player Radio GPS Navigator Bluetooth Map | eBay
Or does anybody else have any other suggestions for a relatively inexpensive HU and back up kit that would work?
Thanks for your input or suggestions!

I'm interested in the backup camera question, as well. I have a Scion touchscreen radio and love it.

Interesting, that first one says 4runner 2002-2009. Is the Ouku brand reliable? I've never heard of it.
I'd like a backup camera and if I could get those other features with it, that'd be a bonus.

When it comes to HU you got many options to choose from. Set your budget and pick one that has all the features you want. I went with JVC KW-V50BT since this thing is fully loaded, has great reviews and I only paid $450, but I seen them on sale for as low as $299. Pioneers or Alpines are almost double the price for same features. Save your money on better amps or speakers instead.
With a backup camera I opted for TaoTronics TT-CC17, check reviews on Amazon and you'll understand why. One of the best reviewed camera on Amazon. Excellent image quality, has a night vision infrared LEDs which work great at full darkness, easy to mount, adjustable angle on the camera (just be careful since those adjusting screws are tiny and delicate), wide FOV, extremely secure due to the fact that this frame is impossible to remove or tamper with from outside due to design (I bolted through the gate). Did I mention its quite cheap at $30? It is also really durable and does not feel flimsy like some plastic counterparts (yes, this baby made from steel/alloy of some sort, the frame is) and IP67 waterproof to boot. I installed this camera 2 month ago and I love it.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question. As I said, I'm new to all this. But how was the install of the back up cam and HUD. Is it easy to set up so when you go into reverse it automatically throws the image on the HUD? Or do you have to manually go to some sort of aux/video mode on the HUD to get rear view?
Thanks again for your help and input!

No, it switches itself if you wire properly 'reverse' wire. Installing camera is quite easy but time consuming. It took me close to 8 hours total over 2 days. For camera you will run 1 video-in to HU, most cameras already come with video cable but it won't be long enough. I would get 12 more feet. The hardest part its run it through rear gate, its a challenge and you need fish tape. There is threads about camera installation, search and pictures there will help. You also need power source to camera which I tapped on to rear right brake light, I also tapped wire from HU (reverse) to same brake wire. Then mount camera itself. TaoTronic comes with the frame, I drilled my gate with 4 new holes since my plate screw broke and I couldn't use it. Bolted it solid and its not going anywhere, theft is impossible or even tampering.

Just received mine and I have a couple of questions to clarify. You drilled through the tailgate and installed bolts on the inside? Does a regular drill bit work for this? Any silicone? Did you drill a separate hole for the wires, and where? Use a rubber grommet? Finally, I'm not sure the cable is long enough to reach the front of the truck. Make one cable long enough or connect an extension cable? Going to be installing this weekend. Thanks!

Camera only. HU is the Scion touchscreen.

Yes, I drilled tailgate with 4 new holes and bolted from inside. May be not the best solution, but my original license plate bolts are rusted and broke so I had to drill them out anyways. Regular bit works but I think I broke one, tungsten ones may work better. Silicone - yes, all around the frame to prevent rattling and in every hole I drilled to prevent rusting. I used a big existing hole in upper middle for my wires to go through. I didn't use rubber grommet, but I lined edge with some electrical tape. As for cable, you need additional, 12 ft will work. I had video cable (16 feet) running from HU, it was male to male. I also purchased female to female coupler and joined them with TaoTronics cable at the back using this coupler.
