So i wanted to store some items i would always like to have in my truck but i didn't want to take up the trunk space for other random items when i need to transport those. So after seeing some other builds i came up with my idea for a cargo box to put in the back that way everything had a place, yet didnt loose any floor space for other things. The goal of this project was to keep the cost low but make something that looks pretty good.
This was my thought for the cargo box.
I thought it looked good so i went ahead and made the base from cardboard just to get an idea of the size
Again it looked good to me so i called up a buddy of mine, (i suggest you all get one of these) his family owns and runs a custom cabinetry building business, so he has been making beautiful creations since he was a small child. like i said above i wanted the cost to be low so i paid for the materials and gave him some beer in the process.
This is the base, two sides and the back of the box. As you can see the back is on an angle because the back seats are so we just matched that angle all the way up. We used one sheet of pre-finished 3/4 inch plywood for the large pieces of this box. that cost me $50. for the rest of the pieces we used any scrap 3/4 inch ply wood we could find.
we put the face on where the drawer would be and then a divider where the drawer would end so nothing would push forward on the drawer.
next we built the drawer and attached the two 12inch full extension slides. the slides were around $8 for the pair.
We cut the top to fit the entire box first then cut the lid for the back storage out leaving a lip all the way around the strengthen the box.
We then attached all then to the box and used two piano hinges for the lid.
I used this folding support that locks into place when ever the lid is opened up to hold it open instead of me holding it open.
and here is the finished box. as the can see i added handles to the drawer, also these wingnut lock things we found in a pile of junk to hold both the drawer and the lid down. i recessed the two on top as to keep the box flat and to prevent things from snagging it.
In all it took a few hours with a good friend and it cost me around $75 in material and beer. Let me know your thoughts!
Looks legit. The more stuff I accumulate for off-roading, the more I'm thinking I may need a drawer system. Going to see what I can cram into the cubbies and whatnot first though.
Looks killer. Do you plan on taking it out or just leaving? If you plan on just leaving it, I say cover it in auto carpet, less of a chance of theft. If you plan on taking it out regularly, put some rhino liner stuff on it. My .02
