transfer case is leaking

Walked out to the garage this morning to find a fluid stream coming from beneath the 4R. Never dealt with this before.

Can you tell where it's coming from? It's not the actuator, so that's good! Mine is leaking from the front seal. And looks similar. I have all the parts to fix it, I just haven't had the time.

I'll use Sunday afternoon to get the skids off and get a closer look. Agreed...probably front seal.

What parts did you obtain for the fix?

Maybe the fill or drain plug? If they are overtightened they can crack the case and under tightened they can come loose. After taking mine apart for a cracked case (at the threads were the last person over tightened the fill plug) I have difficulty believing the Toyota sealant just started leaking. Like cpark said though at least its not the actuator, that is a real pain - and when that leaks it not the sealant, its the rubber gasket. Keep us up

Couple quick notes for you...

The nut is a bear to get off even with air tools, or at least mine was, but better than paying over $300 for have a shop do the work.
Make sure to note the depth of your seal before removing it and you don't have to change the fluid, just top it off if it still looks good.

Took it to an independent shop where they verified it was the front output seal. They then quoted me $1,300 because they claimed that the tcase needed to be dropped and opened up. I was unpersuasive in convincing them otherwise. So it is going to another shop tomorrow where they quoted me $250 labor + parts because they read the actual Toyota repair manual for how to repair it.

I did the rear seal on my old Tacoma. It really wasn't that hard. Same design. It was easier than most any of the other things that I had to do to it.

The nut was staked to keep it from backing off. I took a cheap punch from harbor freight and ground some off of the tip into a small half-moon shape to where it would fit into the little gap where the nut was staked. Two or three taps with a hammer later it was unstaked and came right off.

Good luck.

You've inspired me to go ahead and tackle mine this Saturday! I've had the parts since June or so, but I just kept adding a 2 pumps of fluid once a month maybe because I was lazy! It looks like it may take an hour or so with the right tools though!

It's really not tough. It was easier on the Tacoma just because it was higher and I didn't even have to jack up the truck. On my stock-height 4Runner I'd probably have to lift the front end to give myself some breathing room.

Ah yes. You've obviously been to Springfield before.

Born and raised there, went to Glendale H.S., SMSU, then moved to TX. My parents still live there, so I get my dose of Mexican Villa several times a year. Took the 4Runner out to SMORR once...nice off-road park.
