does your brake pedal go to the floor?

i can routinely press my brake pedal all the way to the floor. when i have already come to a stop and am sitting at a stop light, with very little effort, i can push the pedal all the way down. i spoke with the service department about this and they said that it is completely normal to be able to do this.

seems wierd to me, somewhat unnerving.

anyone else have this "normal" condition on their 4runner?

Sorry, but my wife has the 4runner today.

If the brake pedal touches the floor, it typically means your brake master cylinder is going out. There is a hydraulic seal in the master cylinder that is allowing brake fluid to pass.

I would go to another dealer and get a second opinion.

You mean after you're stopped right? Not when you're actually using the brakes to stop, right?

well, can't say I've tried it, but I'm pretty sure I could push the brake pedal to the floor if I tried.

gonzo, I think your service department guy is full of it. I can't see any way you should be able to push the pedal to the floor, at any time, if things are working correctly.

I'd suggest taking it to a different mechanic. I'll bet you've got something failed or broken, but (especially if your 4Runner is 2003 or newer, with the electric brake booster instead of vacuum) I can't say I know much about what the failure would be.

Is the vehicle leaking anything from under the hood or from the wheels?

Pretty sure that is not normal. I have owned many vehicles and I have never had one where the brake pedal would go all the way to the floor. I would get a second opinion.

No way is it suppose to go to the floor.

Are you able to press it down to the floor in one swift step? Or does it sink down to the floor gradually with constant pressure? If it's the latter, it's the master cylinder.

My '03 2wd SE does this too! I'm going to the Toyota dealer this Friday to get it checked out.

For anyone in socal, which Toyota dealership do u guys recommend for service? I'm planning to go to Longo.

I'd vote for Longo or Northridge Toyota (close to me, far from you).

My pedal does not go to the floor.

This should not happen ever. If the fluid level is OK you either have a bad master cylinder or air in the line.

Yeah this isn't normal. The only time the brake pedal has touched the floor in any of my vehicles is when I've been bleeding the brakes. Otherwise the fluid pressure keeps it from bottoming out.

Take it to a different dealer and get a second opinion. This could turn into a safety issue if you let it go...

Your pedal should never touch the floor if your brakes are operating properly.

This happened to me a few times when I first got the truck. In my case it would be difficult to keep the truck stopped at a red light or stop sign as the pedal gradually sank lower and lower.
