coils for 5160's

fellas- im ordering the bilstein 6112/5160 combo for Total Automotive Performance...im having trouble finding either 1" or 1.5" springs for the back...ive considered new fj springs with a spacer...i cant find where i read about a 1.5" (Icon?) recommended spring that rides nice and should be a good match for the 5160's valving..anyone have a good idea what would work well in this application?? i will ask TAP but i figured to tap into the collective as well

im shooting for ~2" in the front and 1-1.5" in the rear..i will not be adding any substantial weight to the truck...(im still not sure what setting on the 6112 that will be but i'll figure that out when the time comes)

i appreciate any tips or feedback

SAW makes a 1.5" lift coil, but seems like most folks get closer to 2". I don't know of anyone that uses them, but Coil Spring Specialties will make a custom coil based on specs you provide. Any other off the shelf coil will give you 2"+.

I have a set of FJ rear coils with < 5k miles and Cornfed 1" spacers. I purchased them new earlier this year, then swapped out for Icons during the holiday sale.

thanks Ark- i guess the 1.5" springs i was thinking of were the 2" Icons- 10% stiffer than stock iirc...maybe a 2/2 lift would be just fine..i have 265/70/17 DT's on there now..may go w 255's next time...

my runner is an '03 w 150k- i thought about keeping the stock rears and adding a spacer but i think the springs may be worn out plus i want to maximize the suspension performance

btw- how do you like those Icons??

Cheapest option is to throw a $40 Daystar 1.5" spacer on stock coils. I think it would be worth the cost to upgrade while you're already installing new shocks.

I love the Icons, rides much better mainly because I'm not constantly bottoming out the stock rear shocks. My only complaint is I was hoping for 2" lift but got closer to 3".

Yes. With the FJ coils and 1" spacer I was right at 1.5" lift. Was hoping for a small gain but the Icons doubled it. Not a big deal in my case, just adjusted the front coilovers up.

The 5160s should work great with 1.5"-2" lift. I was running FJ coils + spacer with the stock 4runner shocks. I swapped to the Icon shocks/coils which is my current setup.

Yes I do, need to get them cleaned up and posted for sale, just haven't had time. If you decide you're interested, PM me your address so I can get a shipping quote and we'll go from there.

I PM'd TAP a couple weeks ago with what rear springs they recommend for the 6112/5160 combo. They said:
"we offer ICON/Eibach 2" springs which work great with the 5160. They are progressive rate springs, unlike OME or some others so the ride is great on road as well as offroad."

Would just call and ask for it when you order the other stuff.

Interesting, I've haven't seen any progressive coils other than MT long travel and Icon 3" overland coils. Maybe @TotalAutomotiveLV can post up the specifics.

thanks for the post- i really want to get the Icon 2" but as Ark said the lift is >2" and his was close to 3"...it seems hard to pin down what springs/shocks give what amounts..lot of variance

That was John and I believe he was confused between the 2 and 3". The 2" is standard linear spring, the 3" is a dual rate.

2" ICON - 218 constant
3" ICON - 200 over 300
MT Standard - 105 over 250
MT Overland - 140 over 300

I also have a set of 5160s on order and was considering getting the sway a way 1.5" rear springs. I saw on another site that they are currently unavailable and they are looking at a replacement version of those spring. Anyone know about these replacement sway a way springs that are due to come out?
