Smile Tailgate replacement w/o spoiler to one with spoiler

Hello!

This is my first post. The tailgate on my 06 4Runner Sport (without a spoiler) has rusted to the point where I should replace it. Canadian winters are hell on vehicles with the small mountains of salt they pour on our roads.

I found a used tailgate from an 06 4Runner (with a spoiler) in Orlando, FL and it's the exact same color so I won't have to paint it...just bolt it on. I'm pretty happy about this.

My question is, are there any other differences between tailgates with and without the top spoiler? i.e. wiring harness, electronic gate closer, etc? I'm thinking that they should be the same being the same year, but I wanted to make sure before dropping $1,000 to bring it in across the country.

Thank you!
John

Does the new tailgate come with glass and track? If it does, I'm interested in your old door with glass and track. How far are you from Montreal ?

Welcome aboard johnnyb7

The only thing that springs to mind for the swap you are considering is the wiring for the third brake light.

On your current 4Runner it is integrated into the body - the replacement tailgate likely has the third brake light in the spoiler.

I asked the wrecker in Orlando this yesterday. Still waiting for a reply. Hopefully it's a complete tailgate and will keep you posted.

I live about 7 hours from Montreal near Burlington, ON.

Thank you, Bossman!

I think I'm ok then. There is a 3rd brake light on the current tailgate so I'm assuming it's the same harness that connects both gates.

Thanks for the reply!

take a look at toyotapartsdirect.ca . Below are some schematics. Seems like the spoiler 3rd brake light has a longer harness likely to fish into further to where the non spoiler light would likely connect.

Back door wiring
Wiring & clamp. Fits: 2006 Toyota 4Runner LIMITED 4000CC 24-VALVE DOHC EFI, AUTOMATIC 5-SPEED | Toyota Parts Direct

Rear door with spoiler

Spoiler & side mudguard. Fits: 2006 Toyota 4Runner LIMITED 4000CC 24-VALVE DOHC EFI, AUTOMATIC 5-SPEED | Toyota Parts Direct

Center stop no spoiler

Center stop lamp. Fits: 2006 Toyota 4Runner LIMITED 4000CC 24-VALVE DOHC EFI, AUTOMATIC 5-SPEED | Toyota Parts Direct

So you're getting the one with the spoiler?

Looking to do the same and have the same question, did you end up doing the swap? If so were you able to successfully do a straight up swap or did you have to replace the innards with your existing hatch?

It depends on the condition of the tailgate you are buying and what it includes. Generally it will include everything except the inside plastic - but depends where you buy it from. There is no standard when it comes to a replacement tailgate, just whatever the selling person is willing to include

Thanks for the quick reply! I should have been clearer, if it comes with an ECU, do you need to replace that from the existing tailgate or can you use the one that is already in the donor tailgate?

07. 4Runner with and without a spoiler

So I found a lift gate for my '07 4Runner that has a spoiler. Mine does not. So my question is the switch out, will a liftgate with a spoiler have an issue with the roof when you open it? Cuz that's the only thing that I can see because it already has the third brake light and wiring should be fine. Any ideas? Comments concerns. Thanks

Pretty sure the only thing to consider would be an aftermarket roof rack hitting if it extends too far back.
