Tire choices in 255/75R17 size
I am planning to change my tires in the near future (currently have Nitto TG-265/70R17) and based on the tire size I would like to go with (255/75R17) I have narrowed my choices down to Cooper Discover ATP, Goodyear Wrangles DuraTrack and Hankook DynaPro ATM;
Prices for all of them are almost the same (with current offers from Discount tire direct: Goodyear is cheapest and Hankook is most expensive);
So I am looking for any inputs\opinions (grip-on\off road, road noise, quality, mpg impact, etc.) from people who had those tires and have real world experience with them (especially if they had\have them in 255/75R17 tire size);
Thank you in advance!

Cooper STT Maxx
I dont have real world experience with them YET, but this is what I will be getting when the time comes: https://www.treaddepot.com/#!product...nt/90000019975
I have had the Hankooks and now have the Cooper ATPs. I like the ATPs better between the 2. I'm had really good experiences with Cooper and I appreciate that they are made in the US.

I've got the P rated Duratracs and wish I would have gone with the D or E range. Other than easily getting pierced (I've had 2 patched and 1 replaced so far, all due to on road hazards) they've been great tires on and off road. I've been through everything from mud slop to ice under 3-6" of snow and rocky terrain and they've performed awesome. Haven't gotten stuck yet.

So you regret getting the P rated ones because they puncture easier than D or E? I'm running E's right now and considering going to P's for better gas milage. Feel like E's are overkill since this is also my daily driver.

Honestly, I think I just had a string of bad luck with nails on the freeway, haha. I've done more damage on road to them than off road and I've been through some sharp rocks and gravel a couple times without a problem. In comparison, I have the same amount of miles on the General AT2s on my Tacoma which are E rated, and I've had one patched and one replaced. I do still worry about sidewall damage off road though so I think I'll be stepping up to C (If I can find one) or D-E on my next set of tires and I'll likely be going with the ST MAXX.

I am currently running 255 80 R17 in Cooper ST Maxx. I absolutely love these tires and I will never get another brand for as long as I own my 4Runner. They are great in mud, just as quiet as Factory (You think I'm exaggerating, and that's understandable ), great in snow, and perfect in rain.

I run the Cooper ATP in that size. I have had them on since September. Road manners are good. A little hum but nothing obnoxious. Rain performance is fine, actual snow is good. The narrow tire digs in instead of slipping across the top. Ice is sketchy of course. Off road road performance has been better than I expected. I am not rock crawling or anything but have had them through, mudholes, car length hub deep, dry rocky climbs, over grown trails the usual "overland" type stuff. Traction has been very good. I do like the little bit narrower profile for a bit of bite. Not sure that this profile would perform as well in a sandy setting as a wider tire that floats across would.

I agree with this. I'm running the same size ST Maxx on my F150 and they've been fantastic. The Duratracs on the wife's 4Runner are getting kicked to the curb shortly (most overrated tire ever IMO), they'll be getting replaced with ST Maxx or ATPs.

I agree 100% on the DuraTrac's, biggest mistake I've made was buying these. I've had two sidewall splits and will never buy again.
Now to find a good replacement.

Thank you all for replies and info, GY Duratracs and Hankook are out!
Now I need to make a decision to go with Copper ST Maxx or ATPs…LOL…
If you had experience with Nitto TG (in “P”)- which I really like-would you say they are closer (performance, noise, etc.) to Copper ST Maxx or ATPs
Thanks again for helping me!

Go coopers over nitto. I don't know why must be just great marketing but Nittos do okay, wear quickly, noisy, and over over priced.

Revisiting this thread with updates;
Installed Copper ATP (P255/75R17) last Friday;
So far I have mix feelings… here are my thoughts:
Traction: feels great! Very solid on the dry, wet (very heavy rain) and some dirt roads I have tried them on, no complains so far!
Noise: Going from Nitto TG (with about 45k on them) I was expecting the quieter ride… I can hear those ATPs, not bad, but actually they are lauder (between 25 and 50 MPH) than Nitto TG tires were;
Ride: Copper ATP feels definitely softer on the road; there is no harshness when you hit bumps or potholes on the road; and that is despite the fact that I have 37 PSI in them;
Looks: I like ATP’s tread, but I wish side wall would look like Nittos;
Obviously because of its size (255) and side wall design they definitely look more “tacked in” in the wheel wells… so I am trying to get used it;
Note: I have FJ wheels and 2005 4runner which means smaller fender flares… I would recommend a lot of research if anyone is thinking about going with 255/75/R17, have stock wheels and especially if you have 2006 and up 4th gen 4Runner… I do not believe it will look good: too narrow stance.
MPG impact: was hoping to see no change or slight improvement (based on experience of others who went with “skinny” tires), but so far I believe I have no change in MPG (at the best) … or it possibly went down just a bit.
Cornering\Tracking: ATP are less impacted by imperfection on the road, they track straight, but cornering sucks… that is my biggest complain… they do not lose the grip, but truck is leaning a lot more with ATP vs. Nitto tires I had… and I am not sure if it is related to ATP being narrower tire, stiffness of the sidewall.. or both…

i found that spidertrax spacers make it look a lot better being a 255. do a small amount of trim and your done
