4.7 intermittent loss of power and loud roaring engine noise
4.7, 114k miles. Most tune up maintenance is up to date. No CEL. I've noticed a few random times lately when accelerating from a stop an obvious loss of power and the engine sounds much louder, almost a roaring noise.
I've experienced a very similar occurrence in my 4.0 Tacoma in heavy stop and go traffic in extreme heat. When this would happen in my Tacoma my engine temp gauge would shoot above the normal half way mark. When this is happening in my 4.7 4runner my temp gauge is always normal at half way and it is happening in only mildly hot summer temps.
Any help would be appreciated.

Guess would be fan clutch if it's a mechanical type deal. If it's electric obviously this won't apply.
Seen it a lot on the GMC Envoys. Similar noise/complaint.
Good luck

Cooling fan. Normal if it's hot out.

Thanks for the help. Sounds like it's normal and nothing to worry about.

It happens if you start the car and drive right away.

Mine does this all the time. I think it is normal...the conditions are typically:
Above 90 degrees
A/C is on
I stomp on the gas
Cooling Fan kicks in
Thus - loss of power.
I just take my foot off the pedal for a few seconds and gently press the pedal and it appears things go back to "normal"

Sorry to resurrect an old thread... Has anyone replaced the mechanical fan with an electric one to remedy this issue?

If you really wanted to gain some power back, you could convert to an electric fan.

You could also not have the AC on. With it on in the V8, you notice a loss in power when the compressor turns off. Since when the compressor is on, it causes the vehicle to lunge forward a little, when it turns off, you feel like you’re losing power. I had the same complaint when I first got my V8 until I realized it’s normal.
