The coolant is also now actually dropping to the proper level once it cools down.

The old radiator had a small leak above the petcock and was *covered* in mud on the back, which I'm sure didn't help the fan's job trying to cool it. I'm also fairly certain it was clogged, as when I drained it, only a gallon or so of coolant drained out. But after removing it, flipping it around several times, more coolant proceeded to unexpectedly pour out.

I'm still getting the water rushing sound when I turn the truck on sometimes, but I'm assuming I just need to burp the coolant more, as the front wasn't elevated when I burped it last time. So, the heater core was definitely above the radiator cap.

So, hopefully anyone that finds this and has similar symptoms as myself will be able to come out of it without a headgasket replacement...

Thanks for sharing. I have been dealing with this same type of issue for a few months now. I took it into a shop and they had to replace the waterpump seal. the pump was replaced 20k ago and the mechanic said that the person who put in my pump didn't replace the seal...but the same type of leak is back again just how you described it. I open my radiator cap and its full. but my reservoir coolant always goes down to the bottom. I have coolant marks on the top of the reservoir. do you think its the radiator?

Mine was actually doing something a bit different than I thought it was. I believe I updated this thread, but I might not've.

After long drives it would push tons of coolant into and out of the reservoir but then wouldn't suck it back in once it cooled down. And there would be lots of pressure under my rad cap even when the overflow was full. But even then, there would be a lot of air in the radiator instead of coolant.

That said, the radiator is definitely worth looking at. The leak in mine was actually on the back, so the shop I'd gone to hadn't been able to find it.

Bump: Coolant Mysteriously gone after 100 mile trip.

2003 V8 4.7 4Runner.
I just came back from a small road trip (about 200 miles round trip) and noticed that my coolant was bone dry! I also noticed that my oil was also slightly low, which is very uncommon for my vehicle. I filled all fluids back up again but now im worried about making that long trip again.

• No fluid loss during short day-to-day driving.
• One strange symptom i noticed was that while i was driving on that long 100 mile trip, my eyes were VERY irritated when I turned on my heater. I literally was squinting and eyelids twitching when heater was on so i turned it off and the symptoms went away.
• No obvious leaks, puddles, or residue anywhere at all.
• I had my radiator replaced 5 months ago due to an obvious leak. Everything was fine until this road trip but no recent radiator leaks.

What could it be?

Ive been smelling coolant for about a year now without seeing any drips or any obvious signs of a leak including no coolant loss. I just found a tiny pin hole leak on the top passenger side of the radiator in between the radiator and ac condenser. had to lay under the front and point a flash light up in between the radiator and condenser to spot it.
