Suspension Lift Suggestions
Hello everyone,
The stock suspension on my 2005 T4R SR5 is in bad shape and needs to be replaced. Rather than replacing it with another OEM stock setup, I'm interested in going with an aftermarket solution and possibly a small lift. I've read most of the FAQs on suspension mods but I need some recommendations based on my needs.
I use my 4runner mostly for relatively short work commutes as well as backpacking/hiking trips on the weekends. I don't do any kind of recreational offroading but I have been in situations when driving to trailheads where the 4runner doesn't have enough ground clearance to get there. And since my suspension sags it frequently bottoms out on rougher trails.
I have no other modifications other than cosmetic but at some point I'll probably add some aftermarket sliders and skid plates. Bumpers and wenches are most likely a little overkill for my needs so this new suspension would only need to accommodate the extra weight of the sliders and skid plates.
Overall I'd like to find a nice middle ground between a rock climber and a commuter to allow me to push through the occasional rough trail when adventuring out on the weekends. Budget isn't too much of a concern for me.
Thanks for your help!

Sounds like Bilstein 5100s all the around ought to take care of it. Complete set on Amazon is under $400.

Would you suggest aftermarket coils to go with them?

I've seen where a lot of people use the FJ springs. This post is helpful:

I have the FJ/bilstein 5100 setup and it's a very mild lift (.5" rear, 2" front). I have the 5100s set to 1.75" with the FJ springs.
It rides nicer than stock XREAS. Absorbs bumps better, but has a little bit more body roll due to the additional height.
It's a great setup if you spend most of your time on the road.

Would love to see a before and after profile to compare the rake.
I have a stock Sport right now and it has a fairly pronounced rake, X-REAS still intact. I don't know if the original owner did anything else with it, but have to say I like the profile right now. I'll post a pic when can. Since the rear is so high, a trailer probably wouldn't over-level it toward the back. But, I would like to swap out all the key parts, keep the profile with a little lift...

This is one of the lifts I'm considering, but I'm not finding the used FJ springs. Do you know which are the better options for new FJ springs - Moog or something else?

That's a looker, for sure...looks level.
*Edit to ask where the tubular style running boards can be sourced.

3" difference. So I guess the sequence is select tires, then work around those for modification of rake and lift...(?)
(Image enhanced to show the top edges of the tires better.)

Craigslist usually best place, find a 2006+ sport or urban runner. Only ones with those tubes.
