Chrome door handles...covers or part of the handle?

I have chrome door handles on my 2006 Sport. They seem like covers though, when I pull the door handle out I can see the white handle underneath and in looking at 4th gens with white door handles, there is no "cover". Im new to 4runners so this might be a stupid question but can I remove the chrome cover? I figured Id ask before I start prying on stuff. Worst case scenerio Im going to just paint match them white I guess...

Any quick help on this silly question would be appreciated. Thank you!

I'm pretty sure they are just covers held on with double sided tape from what I have read, but wait for confirmation from others who know for sure before trying to pry them off.

Thats what it looks like! But a Google search didn't bring up any chrome door handle covers so that made me skeptical. Hopefully someone can confirm..

I cannot guarantee you 100%, but once upon a time there were peel and stick chrome overlays that you could put on your handles. I never seen them on a vehcile however. Why someone would want to cover up colored handles to have chrome handles is beyond me. I bought white handles from Toyota to replace the chrome handles that came with my SR5. To each their own.

Sure looks like chrome overlays to me.

I say go for it.

Were your chrome handles one piece looking or two piece looking like mine kinda look? These really do look like overlays but I'd hate to mess up my handles taking these off if they aren't

My chrome handles did not look like yours. The only way to describe it is that it looks like the chrome grill. I don't know how Toyota applys the "chrome" but my OEM chrome handle was entirely chrome (chrome plating).

On your handle you can see white on the inside of the grip. Not so with the OEM chrome handles, as the complete handle is chrome plating. It is very apparent to me that what you have is an aftermarket chrome overlay handle that is secured with two-sided tape. I cannot verify that because although I have seen them on ebay, I have never seen them in person.

Toyota doesn't build crap like that handle. Their chrome handle is completely chrome.

You have chrome overlays. I am 99.99% positive.

Edit: here's a link to JA's site for the various years and their changes. I haven't looked for the differences, that's your job now:

Yep, they were overlays. I peeled those things off today and found perfect white handles underneath. While I was at it, I debadged the truck and removed old clear bra.

Fantastic! Debadging the truck is fun and imo makes for a nice, clean look. Removing them can be a real pain, but the payoff is the clean look.

I put my last Toyota skull on the grill a few days ago. Looks great! I've got to put my photos into my garage soon. My 08 is coming along ok.

Yeah, dealers like to put on chrome stuff to make it seem more fancy. Mine had a chrome grille cover and rear garnish cover. Looked hideous. I was so happy when I figured out that I could just take em off

Good for you! Colored handles are the only way to go.

Yeah, I was in Desert Toyota in Tucson and they had a new 09 4Runner with overlay chrome handles. Looked like $hit!. I forgot all about that. It looked exactly like the OPs.

I told 'em that too when a sales person came up.

I think my dealer used the rear cover to cover a small rust spot on the hatch (which I'm now somewhat upset about, but it should be fine with some TLC) and some rock chips on the front. I remember the salesman telling me about how expensive the "replacement front and rear chrome" was (AKA $40 eBay parts).

The part I was most pissed about is that I'd bought a used white grille for $100 and was in the process of putting it on when I discovered that the chrome was just a cover..............
