Replacing crank position sensor on a 2005 V6 - how difficult?

I just bought a 2005 V6 and the CEL is on. Code shows the problem is with the Crankshaft Position Sensor. I ordered a replacement from RockAuto but haven't had a chance to so much as look at where this thing goes yet. Anyone ever had to replace theirs? How difficult is it? Thanks in advance.

One would hope the crank sensor would be on the outside, but who knows. Did ya check the service manual?

I didn't. The truck did not come with a service manual, and all of the resources I've looked at online don't work.

This is for a 2007 same engine. Maybe the diagram will help?

You have to remove the belt, alternator, A/C compressor, and the A/C compressor bracket. The A/C compressor lower bolts are a bit of a *****, but not that bad overall...

What is the specific code that you're getting?

Thanks! Definitely helps. Also not super easy to get to apparently.

Forgot which code it is. A friend is working on it now though and apparently it's for the camshaft solenoid...which apparently can be set off by low oil?

Get the specific codes and I can point you to some testing to pinpoint it.

Cam solenoid codes will be electrical faults...cam position codes and cam/crank correlation codes are because the cam timing is not as commanded by the ECM. Could be anything from a jumped chain, sludge clogging up the VVTi passages/solenoids/actuators/screens. Oil would have to be pretty low...you'd hear a bunch of racket from the chain tensioners not pressurizing most likely.

I’ve got a P0335 code throwing in my 4th gen, it’s an 08 T4R SR5 V6 4WD with 151k. I had my battery and alternator tested to make sure it wasn’t low voltage throwing the code. Changed my alternator and code was still there, moved on to swapping the Crankshaft Position Sensor itself and not even 10 miles down the road the lights came back on and it’s throwing the same code. Any ideas?

It's about time to replace the timing chain. Must have been too stretched already.

Looks very easy. However, I would try cleaning the electrical contacts and the sensor and reluctor wheel first. I've seen crud get on these and cause problems with the sensor. A quick squirt of cleaner and compressed air fixes the problem.
