Aftermarket head unit, Factory JBL with steering wheel controls issue

Guys,

I've been having this issue for a while now. About a year ago I got an aftermarket head unit installed in my 2004 limited. The rig has the JBL sound system, with steering wheel controls. The install shop said I needed an additional box that housed the steering wheel controls as well as the translation language for the factory amp. Reason for this is that the factory system is all analog signal, and the aftermarket system is a digital signal. Makes sense.

At first I had a pioneer system installed. Had issues with sound cutting out on some speakers randomly, then after an undetermined amount of time, the sound would cut out all together. The only way I was able to recover sound was to turn off the vehicle for about 5 minutes or more and restart. It does not happen all time either. I can go weeks with no problems, but then there are times where I drive for a few minutes and it cuts out.

After about a month or two, I got fed up with it enough to where I took the vehicle back to my installer and had them swap everything out to a kenwood setup. Same problem exists.

It does not matter whether I am playing radio, cd, USB plug in or Bluetooth. A new issue that came up with the kenwood is that if I am driving around and running errands, go into a store for a few minutes and come back out (this is only with the Bluetooth), restart the vehicle, the Bluetooth reconnects, but then have no sound. I can see the song time moving as if it's playing on the screen, but no sound.

Any ideas? Thanks guys.

That sounds incredibly frustrating. By chance have you seen this thread?

Installed new HU with PAC TATO, now volume cuts in and out

The factory JBL amp is fed by a data line, not an analog signal like most amps, so I think they have that backwards. Have you tried having them install an aftermarket and to see if you didn't short out/cause a failure in your JBL amp by going aftermarket? It's not common but I could see how a stereo shop could muck that up (I've seen more sketchy stereo/alarm shop work than I've seen good work come out of those places.)

This could possibly be an easy fix for you. I have a 04 t4r w/ jbl & steering wheel controls that had the same problem after installing a pioneer radio and the PAC audio RP4.2-TY11 unit. Super frustrating!! At first I thought the radio was having an issue. Come to find out it's the PAC audio RP4.2-TY11 unit that connects the steering wheel controls and jbl system to the new pioneer radio. There is a new firmware update from PAC audio. You need to find your unit. Remove it from the vehicle. Go to pacs website download the new update and update installer. Hook the PAC unit to your computer and run the update. Fixed my problem. Hasn't happened since. It's been at least 3 months.

Sounds reasonable. I will have to locate the unit and try this.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and help!

It should be in close proximity to the radio unit itself. Pop the climate control panel off and look around. May need to pull that whole trim piece around the radio off
