So this will reinforce the frame in the areas it's failing?

Replaces it. I’ll cut out the bad section, including the trailing arm hanger, leave the good, then this slips over and welds into place.

Small accomplishments today. Replaced my worn out homemade engine splash guards with Rad Rubber and replaced the old USB port with a new one.

Forgot to post the frame repair. I ended up not using the SafeTCaps since the damage wasn’t that extensive. An awesome local metal fabricator welded it up for me so I could get on the road. Still have the SafeTCaps if anyone needs them at a discount.

Today’s Shenanigans and Çlüstęrfük

Was driving home the other day and the spark plug for cylinder 5, after 60k miles, shot out destroying the threads. Waiting for a time-sert kit to be delivered to give it a go on repairing it. Figured while I’m in there, I’d clean out my injectors and replace the o-rings. New coils on the way too.

Original injectors cleaned out, cleaned up, new o-rings/grommets. Good as new.

Sad coils for the garbage

Ended up having to do 2 cylinders and this is the after product using the time-sert kit.

It’s not a cheap fix, mainly due to the price of the Time-Sert tool set, but it’s a permanent one compared to other inserts like a Heli-Coil. And cheaper than a replacement cylinder head.

Nice job on that repair. That must have been a pretty stressful job to do. Is it the same thread pitch afterward?

It WAS stressful, but my thought was I could spend a lot of money taking it to a mechanic or fail trying to fix it and take it to a mechanic.

Thread pitch stays the same. There’s also a tool in the kit to cut a new washer seat. I had to use the extended Time-Sert kit to get the reach into the head. The correct part number for our vehicles is 4412E-111.

How do you keep all the metal shavings from dropping down into the cylinder?

Does that same kit work for the V6 engines?

My guess is that you can't stop them from falling down into the cylinder. There must be a way to vacuum them up afterward?

Make sure the valves are closed. Used heavy wheel grease between the flutes of the tap to catch most of the shavings. Compressed air to blow out the rest.

Same kit for the V6 for a first time fix. If previously repaired with a failed heli-coil, then I believe you have to use the Big-Sert kit.

It was finally NOT 100 degrees today and I remembered I had made a budget winter purchase! Front recovery points from BBG. I think I picked them up new and shipped on Amazon for $96 last winter.

I literally just pulled it so I'll update once I split it. I opted for the additional transfer case overhaul kit from my local Toyota parts dept so all the seals will be getting replaced. Got the actuator seals from Colonial Seal.
