Bouncy Dobinsons front end

Hey Mike. I've got a puzzle for you. I had heard lots of good things about Dobinsons so I decided to give them a try. The setup that I went with was recommended by your guys @ Dobinsons Direct. The issue I'm having is that the front end feels very bouncy, with an almost knocking sound at times. Sort of like the suspension is returning way too fast. I have a 2007 V6 4Runner, with no aftermarket bumpers (yet). Full RCI aluminum skid plates underneath, and a Prinsu aluminum roof rack. My suspension setup is a pair of Dobinsons Front GS59-220 black extended travel struts, w/ C59-302 red coils, assembled by your guys in Miami (Front setup netted about 3.5" of lift). Paired w/ Icon Delta Joint Upper Control Arms, Icon sway bar relocation bracket and a 1” Diff Drop. The rear has Dobinsons CS59-705 Black Shocks w/ Icon 2” Rear Coil Springs, along with a OME 10mm Polyurethane Rear Coil Trim Packer (Driver side). I've had the alignment done twice, per y'alls recommendation. I also loosened (then retightened) the nut on the lower strut mount bolt to allow the bushing to rotate to its correct alignment. These solutions sort of helped a little, but not a big change. I've been running this setup for at least a month, so things should have settled in a bit by now. I appreciate your feedback. Thoughts?

Knocking sound is possibly the sway bar links. When they go bad, that's the sound they make.

Bouncing? I haven't heard anyone describe it that way before. That front coil and strut combo is super common, and a lot of guys in this thread are running them. You're running the softest rear shocks, and those Icon rear coils are pretty soft I've heard, so that could be part of your bounciness....

Hi Mike,

I've been happy with my 300/505 setup for the past couple years, but I want to change it out for something taller. I'm currently looking at the following setup and was making sure you didn't see any flaws in my thinking

Front: 302 coils/220 struts
Rear: 677V coils/701 shocks

To run the above I would need to add UCAs, diff drop, and bump stops?

While running this setup I will have: Wilco rear tire carrier w/ spare, full length Front Runner roof rack, 2000mm awning, 150lb RTT, steel rock sliders

I don't mind rake when the tent isn't mounted, but I absolutely don't want the rear to sit low when I've got everything on it--will the above setup sit level or with slight rake and provide at least 3" of lift with all the gear I've got on it? Do I need extended brake lines for the rear?

Thanks for your help!

Is the tent going to be up there all the time? Or will it come off for most of the year, like most people do?

Do you already have all those parts on it? How does the suspension handle it now? The 677V's have a stronger final spring rate than the 505's, so they can support the weight better, in comparison.

No brake lines needed if you don't run the full LT rear shocks. And yes to all those parts up front.

Tent lives up there from roughly September-May; being in Texas it only comes off for the summer when it gets too hot out. All of those parts are on it right now with the exception of the sliders which are scheduled a handful of weeks out. It feels like it rides somewhat rough around town compared to a friends 5th gen who has the variable springs which is why I thought I'd switch the rears to the variables. When the tent is on it does look like it sits fairly level

OK, thanks for that. I'd suggest the 677V's, as it would be too tall I think if you ran the 701V's (the next step up) as they're designed to hold more weight, and without that additional weight, you'd end up with more lift, so it would have a pretty big rake.

Hey All-

Here is my 2008 V6 with the following suspension installed:

Front: 302/221 (2.5" lift) + Dobinson 1/4" driver side spacer (PS59-4030) + Dobinson UCAs
Rear: 505/705 (1.5" lift) + Dobinson 15mm driver side spacer (PS59-4025) + Dobinson rear adjustable swaybar links
Also had a diff drop installed while I was at it
Tires are 275/70/17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W, Load range C, on Level 8 Trackers (17/8.5, -6 offset)

Extremely happy with the way it turned out and the ride quality! Haven't taken any measurements yet, but let me know if someone needs them.

Hey Mike,

I have an idea of what I would like to run, but I wanted to run it by you before I put my order in:

Front:
C59-296 coils/ GS59-220 Struts

Rear:
C59-675V Coils/ GS59-575 Shocks

It's an '09 V6 with a roof tent that I keep on it year round. I have Moog FJ Cruiser springs on it now and I don't have a problem with sagging, even when I'm loaded with camping gear, so I'm not too worried about that. I just wanted to make sure that the springs I've picked will be tall enough for the LT shocks (with proper bumpstops), and that the vehicle will sit level. Thanks for your time!

Hey bud,

So that won't give you too much lift up front, about 2.5" to 2.75" I'd say, and then about 2" in the rear with the RTT. You'll still have about 1" to 1.5" of rake I'd guess.

Yes, those coils and LT shocks work hand in hand with the bump stops.

Ok awesome. Would you recommend I go with the 677v springs in the rear to keep it more level? My only concern is making the ride too harsh without having a rear bumper/tire carrier.

You could. The final spring rate of the 677V isn't high at all so they aren't rough even when the truck is empty.
