Body Mount Chop??
I wasn't sure where to post this, but seeing that it pertains to my 4th Gen I'll start here. Would it be ok for me to chop my body mounts and not get to welding the plate on for a little while? I wouldn't be wheeling or anything, just maybe some street driving. I'm not sure if there could be structural issues and wanted to see what you guys thought or to see if anyone has run with "open" body mounts. Thanks!

I wouldn't do it. The plate which will keep the structure of the mount strong. I body chopped mine and had a chance to look at it (not drive) without the plate. Nope. I never want to drive without welding the plate.

Been driving mine not welded for almost 4 years. Works just fine. I will weld some in when I do some cam tab gussets.

You'll be fine without the plate for a while. Plenty of people run no plate. I would use some spray paint to protect the bare metal from the elements though. Don't want that thing rusting while you wait to do the plate and seal it up.

Ive debated this back and forth recently as I want to do the body chop sometime soon. Ill get around to welding it eventually but I am gonna run it without the plate for a good while.

Thanks guys! Next time I have the grinder out I'll chop the body mounts. I'll probably weld plates on in a month or so.

Cut mine off over a year ago, I got the plate to cover them up but think I might end up chopping more so I left it open and trim more every once in a while. Plenty of people running open body mount tabs with no issues. They appear to be shaped that way for manufacturing purposes, the extra reinforcement is not needed.

I rub just a tad still on the corner at full lock when compressed. I'm going to trim slightly more and find somebody to plate it

It's ideal to reinforce the area with a plate, that being said I'm a hypocrite and lazy as I've been running over a year with it chopped and not plated and wheelin' fairly hard. So... plate it preferably, but not the end of the world if you don't?

I got to see a few body mount chops the past weekend at an offroad event, most were plated off, a couple were not.. it seems many people round off that back edge and actually weld 2 pieces of steel with a seem in the middle and grind it down to a round edge then paint it to make it look good and give the most clearance from the tire.
Planning on doing this myself in the coming weeks. But i will need someone to weld it..

My baby chop that gets me by on these tires with minimal rubbing. I intend to cut more and plate it but not on high priority of things to do.

Metaltech has $20 3/16" plates bent and ready for welding back together if you choose...I have them myself and look to be doing this body-mount chop soon.
