Tweeter Wiring help
Hey guys,
I got some small pioneer tweeters to replace my OEM ones. I snipped the wires off the factory ones right at the solder. And I was going to tie the new tweeter's wires into the OEM harness. As far as I can tell, there's 4 wires coming from the car. But only 2 wires on my new tweeters. Unclipping that harness makes the door speaker inop as well. It looks like the 4 wires are tied together to make 2 in the harness and both those connect to the OEM tweeter as a single pos and neg. The OEM tweeter also has an addition wire on there that goes to the capacitor/bass blocker. However when I tie the 2 new wires to the oem harness the tweeter sounds very quiet and muffled.
The only real options I see are, 1 I don't know wtf I'm doing, 2, both new tweeters are broken or 3, maybe since the OEM harness looks like 18 gauge and the pioneer wires are 20, that they can't handle the power? I'm leaning towards 1. Any ideas?
Thanks

Well I tried listening to my other tweeter. I think it's option 1. Sounds good when the speaker is combined with it. I don't think I understood what a tweeter was. I was expecting more of a component speaker with just highs.

Factory dash speakers are not tweeters, they're a full range speaker to a degree. They offer mids and highs, not just highs like a tweeter. Get rid of the tweeters you bought and buy yourself a 3.5" coax speaker. That'll give you more of what you're looking for.

On the 5th gen I think that's the case. I'm not sure the 4th Gen is like that.

Hmm that's very possible. Do you have a picture of the OEM speakers you pulled out of the dash?

if the tweeter sound is muffled, its blown. easier to just swap a new set of speaker, alpine type s is a good stock replacement. is sounds good when amped too.
like some users here replace that so call tweeter with a 3.5 coax.
some of us do full blown setup.

JBL or non-JBL?
Is your entire system still stock?
What ohm is high range speaker you took out of the upper door? (Should be printed on the back of the speaker)
What ohm is the new tweeter?

Non JBL, and it's not stock. I have Rockford Fosgate R165X3 up front and Pioneer TSG1345R in the rear. The old tweeter says 8ohm, 9 watts. New tweeter says 120w max and 40ohm and impedance 4ohm.
And I'm sure a 3.5 coax is indeed what I expected, but from what I can see, they don't fit without door modification. I'm running a 16 Scion FR-S radio with no amp or anything, so it's not like I have anything premium.

The R165X3's are a 3 way speaker. This means the tweeter is built into the center of the midrange speaker as a single unit.
A component set will split the midrange woofer and tweeter up. The stock system is a cheaply made component set, with a high range and midrange speaker with in-line filters.
That tweeter is not designed/engineered to work together with that 3-way speaker on the same circuit. As in, the ohm loads are different as well as the speaker sensitivities.
One will play louder than the other, maybe the tweeter has a built in filter, etc..
IMO, you could either:
1. Keep just the 3-ways in the front, -or-
2. Put a component set in the front
(If you want the speakers louder, get an external amp)
(If you want more highs, adjust the headunit filters...still not bright enough...get an external amp)
You could be limited to what you can do with that stock scion headunit, but there are ways around the headunit's limitations, like an AudioControl crossover.

Yes.
O.P.,
Many of us maybe thousands of miles away. How do we know what you are dealing with?

A picture paints a thousand words.
Toyota components are bullet-proof. Issues often arise from poor wiring, assembly and/or maintenance. Suspect those first.
Next only to our senses, the multi-meter is the most important electrical diagnostic tool. Spend $6 at Harbor Freight or $$$ blindly replacing parts.

did you get a crossover or do you have one? if so wire the 2 wires that were going to the oem tweeter to the crossover input then run wires from the cross over to your tweeter and woofer.

Sorry to revive an old post, but what do you do with the 2 wires from bottom speaker? The OEM tweeter harness has 4 wires; 2 tweeter wires and 2 bottom speaker wires. I have the positive from both going to positive crossover wire and the negative from both going to the negative crossover wire, and i’m getting some crackling in the tweeter at both high and low volume. Do I need to wire in a capacitor?
