Steering Wheel Shake

I saw this problem in the Gen 3 section and I have the exact same problem with my 2004 Sport V6.

Steering Wheel Shake

I've noticed it from day one and am wondering if it is getting worse since a tire roto...Any other Gen 4 guys ever hear of, or experience, a similar problem, know what is causing it? Thanks for any comments or insight.

Edit to say it only happens when going over a bump, more pronounced at highway speeds, otherwise smooth going.

Yes and I think I have narrowed mine down to bad shocks in the front end. My XREAS system is dead and the truck bounced like an old cadillac. Somewhere in that thread I read someone suggested that because the shock is not holding the tire down to the road it causes the steering wheel to shake. I am currently working on buying new shocks to hopefully fix the issue.

I had this actually today. So originally after my 3" lift and 33 tires plus aftermarket method nv wheels I had a very minor shake from 48-60mph. Not enough to bother me.

Well today I had my tires balanced and everything went to heck. I had horrible steering wheel shake around the same speeds. Went from about a 15% shake before tire balance to a 55% shake after.

Took the truck back to discount tire and had them rebalance the tires as well as install some hubcentric rings for my method nv's and solved the issue. I think mine was a wheel balance issue more so than the hubcentric rings bc I did not have them before today and it wasn't a bad shake.

So all that backstory for: Could be a tire out of balance.

Thanks, I have to replace mine also and am working on sourcing the parts. I think I may have an installer. But, I'd sure hate to go through all that and still have the problem.

Just had our 3" lift installed last Friday, and had some minor shaking at about 50mph+, Monday the wife took it in to get it re-torqued while I was at work, told the guy about it and he fixed it. Tire was off balance, no more shake now. Hopefully it's just something minor like that! Best of luck!

Try this. Easy fix. Worked like a charm and never came back after blue Loctite.

I don't think independent front suspension needs one (but I don't know why). It's usually only found on trucks with solid front axles.

There are probably dozens of things that could cause the wheel to shake. Unbalanced tires or wheels, uneven brake rotor, sticky CV joint, loose suspension parts, bad shocks, etc.

Steering wheel Wobble at 40+

2006 4runner limited (always in 4wd model)
Recently installed a 3 inch lift (ome springs and Bilstein shocks) 17" wheels 33" bf all terrain tires with balance beads ( shipped mounted and balanced)

Steering wheel wobbles at 40+ mph

New CV axles were installed, and it still wobbles ( they were bad anyway)

I'm lost ... Any help would me much appreciated.

How's your steering and suspension components? It sounds like tire balance to me, but if you've ruled that out, check your tie rods (outer and inner) and your control arm ball joints and bushings (upper and lower). Hope that helps.

+1 on the above. Tie rods, inner and outer, mine were shot. That helped a lot. The other portion was crappy alignment after bouncing off some rocks.

Having your tires shipped mounted and balanced also doesn't say much, could be a much quicker and cheaper attempt prior to throwing more parts at it.
