Does the T4R Need Software Updates?

Before I decided to get a 4-Runner, I was researching Volvo XC-70s on several forums. They talked a lot about having to get various software upgrades at the Volvo dealership, just to get their new or almost new cars running properly. The XC-70s are fun and comfortable to drive.
But it seems that high-end European AWD cars have become over engineered electronically.
Are electronics problems and new sofware tweaks an issue at all with 4th gen. 4-Runners?
thanks,
JP

All makes have some sort of updates or reprograms for issues like shift flares or harsh engagements, mostly transmission related for the Hyundai

I haven't seen any software updates for the 4Runner, but Toyota, like all manufacturers, has the vehicle loaded with computers. Not all of the body computers allow a software update, though. It's not hard to find a Toyota TSB about some body part that's not acting right, and the solution is to replace the Electronic Control Unit, or ECU, which is car-lingo for "computer".

I haven't seen any TSB's that apply to the 4th Gen 4Runner that are computer-related, but Toyota does have them. The most notorious software fix I can think of applied to the 3.3L V6 powertrain used in Highlanders, Siennas, and the Lexus RX 330. The transmission shifting is optimized to conserve fuel, but it had a horrible problem with the trans shifting rough or being indecisive. Fortunately, a software update fixed that.

Computers are a fact of life in today's cars. But whether or not you have to worry about them probably has a lot to do with how much the manufacturer tests the software before putting it into production. Toyota must do a lot of testing first!

There was a TSB for the 2003 traction control computer. I had my traction control computer & yaw sensor replaced under it. But I think they corrected the issue in later models.

yes and no... Only the dealer will have access to the updates, so this is not "user upgradable software". From time to time, they will have updates available for emissions control, braking control, traction control, etc. If you report an issue, the dealer can connect and flash upgrade the system or component that is faulty.

That's a Volvo for ya. I had a new '05 S40 and that thing needed software updates every week just to keep the radio working and the various sensors functioning correctly! Needless to say, I'm SO very happy I got rid of that thing and got another 4Runner. I learned my lesson the hard way!
