Help! NO START NO Crank Issue

Good morning All,
I am having a No start, no crank, no click issue. Am very close to admitting defeat and taking it in.
I have had my 4 runner for 3 years with out a single issue up until this point.

On Friday I dropped it off with the wife and took my Land cruiser, got a call that night, it wont start.
I trouble shooted /tried to jump it and went back on Saturday with tools and for testing.

Symptoms: Turn the key, power turns on, when I turn the key nothing. Not even a click. Lights in the truck do not dim.

What I checked
-I pulled the starter, took it to be tested, it works fine. (have never had a hard starting problem.)

-Checked the voltage on the battery and was at 12.4 I imagine since I had tried numerous times to start it had drained slightly. I took the battery out of my cruiser and still did not start. Put 4runner battery in my cruiser and it started. Battery Possibility, eliminated.

-Checked fuses, starter relay, ignition fuse, STA fuse pretty much all fuses.

I read through the different threads, and could not come up with any similar symptoms.

Any help would be appreciated.

I was gonna say maybe fuel pump but if you have a good starter AND battery, maybe bad ignition switch due to fact it won't even turn... Don't think our keys have chips in them..

Make sure your battery cables are on tight and battery posts are clean from build up.. Also check your truck's ground cable..

I know you said your starters fine, but since its out, you may want to check/change the contacts. They can wear prematurely and cause the symptoms youre having.

So you said no "click" no start, etc. right? So it's not even turning over. Sounds like an interlock kind of problem. The truck has all the nanny features so it will only start in park. However, if it's in park but not running there's an interlock that won't let you shift out of park.

Pop the little square hatch (fingernail sized) next to the shift lever. Depress the switch inside and shift it out of park. Run that back and forth a few times then back to park. Give that a shot. Maybe/hopefully that will work the switch loose.

This might help too:

Tighten the battery connections. I had these same symptoms before.

I had this issue once after I finished working on some electrical wiring, I had unplugged one of the harnesses and the car just wouldn't start, no crank nothing - i plugged it back in and there it went!

Thank you

Thank you for the advice, I've tightened the terminals, cleaned them, swapped batteries.

I never had an intermitted problem, it just happened out of the blue, with out any additional wiring work.

My thoughts were it could still be the security alarm giving me fits, tried resetting it with the key fob. No joy. Tried starting in neutral, no joy.

Used a testing probe that could energize the starter and it would start to turn but would not turn over.

Close to admitting defeat and getting it towed.

You pulled the starter which in itself is a PITA job by pulling the upper intake manifold. So, you have the skills and I bet we can help you with the troubleshooting issue.

Have you tried to wiggle the shifter from P to N while holding the key in IGN mode? I wonder if the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS) is making poor contact? Or maybe the NSS connector is loosy/goosy? This is common in the landcruisrers as well due to age and crud making their way into the contacts. I have a 80 series but thankfully hasn't happened to me yet!

I live in Tijeras so I can come down to help you after work one day. Shoot me a PM with your contact details and I'll see what I can do. Anything to save money is a priority in my book.

if you have a alarm installed, try to hit the unlock on the remote first. then try to crank the truck again, could be the started kill still activated. if you know where the relay for it is, just unhook the ground trigger to it. take pictures and show us whats underneath the dash and i might help you solve the problem. to me right now, it sounds like a active starter kill doing its job.

There are also 2 relays in the engine compartment box you should check, the ACC Cut Relay and the Starter Relay.

Did he mention it was a V8? I assumed if he had the starter out it was probably a V6 since he didn't mention the annoying placement of it (on the V8).

@El_Jefe_83

Does your vehicle have an aftermarket alarm installed? Make sure it didn't have a "Port/Dealer" unit installed. IF It does have one of those, pop the steering column cover off, locate the start signal wire off the ignition that they cut and tapped for the alarm, bridge the splice with a paper clip, new piece of wiring, and/or just cut and restore the wire to factory. IF the vehicle starts or at least cranks after doing this, it's the alarm unit and/or relay that's gone out on you.

IF that's not the case we'll see what we can do to help out on our end.

Post Note-

If the vehicle won't even turn over, it's not a Toyota security issue. If the Immobilizer was acting up you'd still have the ability to crank the vehicle over but it would not fire the injectors or ignition system (because that's how it disables the vehicle until an appropriate key is detected). Also you'd see the "security" light flashing with a known good key in the ignition (this would indicate the vehicle does not detected a registered key).
