just curious on whether or not it is typically worth it to buy bumpers not pre welded. I see there's sometimes options to buy the bumpers as parts, or to buy them ready to go. Is it much worth buying as parts, then taking it to a shop and having it welded, or would you only buy as parts and weld it if you could do it yourself?

I bought mine as a kit and welded myself. It was a fun project that I’m super proud of. If you don’t have the equipment to weld it but know someone with it or have a shop that can weld it cheap it may save some money. I think the biggest issue may be logistical. My kit was 90 Lbs and the box it came in showed. UPS carriers obviously struggled with it between Florida and Nevada. Now a fully built bumper may be shipped differently like on a pallet in a truck and you might have to ship to a dock with a forklift as it won’t fit on a regular delivery truck. That plus the extra cost of pre welded could be a substantial cost. Even if I couldn’t weld it myself I’d still buy a kit and have it welded locally. I’m fortunate to have a lot of friends and family with welders though.

So I hit a deer last night I think I came out fairly lucky but anyone have any fairly cheap ideas for building a steel tube bumper that’ll help with clearance

Is there a guide to the different armor needed when prerunning vs. rock crawling? Or is it basically the same? I’d rather go lightweight protection than ultra beef since I don’t plan on slamming on big rocks or anything.

I had aluminum skids on my FJ. For light weight thats OK but I was constantly removing them to straighten them.....So go with a good steel set and move on to the next mod.

I have a low-pro winch bumper from Lost Trails. I'm a big fan of it because it looks like it could've been an OEM option and the guy who runs it is super nice.

I also have an 80% Offroad rear swingout. It rattles a lot, but I put some craft foam on sensitive areas and that's helped a bunch.

I’ve been off of getting a winch bumper b/c I want exactly what you mentioned, something that looks like it could be factory. I call my build style “stealthy stock” - goes wherever I want but doesn’t look heavily modded. I’m looking into this front bumper though I may wait until Black Friday.

Oh, and my truck asked me to tell you that she loves your grill. ;-)

From seeing your post to installed…

I've got one of those stealth bumpers. Let me know if you want to check it out in person.

That's the one. Bought it used from a guy who had his 4th gen totaled but pulled it off before it went to the crusher.
