Help with installing new high pressure power steering line

I had a leak in the hoses so I ordered a replacement from rockauto to replace all the lines. 2005 runner sr5. That high pressure line on the driver side was so hard to cut off with no room back there. I finally said **** it and cut the metal line with a sawzall and got a socket on it. Pushed it with my foot and it gave and was able to get it off. This took like two hours. Now I am having a hard time trying to reconnect the new line. It just won't bite so I can screw it in. Any tips????? It is so tight in there I don't see how I can get it tight like they had it. I gave up for tonight. thanks.

Is it a flare fitting at the rack? Can you share a picture when you get a chance? They aren't easy to get started and you gotta be sure you're square to avoid thread damage. A crow's foot will help a lot to get it right. Adding a swivel to it and then an extension has given me a lot of luck in the field.

Something like this with the hex head shape is best so prevent rounding. I'm sure harbor freight or ace hardware would have them too

Good luck

I have never done a PS line on a 4runner, but many many others. They generally are not fun to do. That said, it likely seemed tighter then it really was. It will either be a O ring or flaired fitting. Neither need to be that tight, just snug.

Old fittings and bolts are just hard to break loose, they corrode, get debris, and all the heat cycling kinda sets them in place tighter.

I just can't get started by hand. It keeps popping off. I don't know if I should take the rack out to get it started.

this is what many people do, otherwise you will cross thread it and ruin the rack and the hose.

yes its a PITA but compare extra time and effort to the price of having to buy another rack.

PS - the reason they are so tight is they put the hoses on the rack before installing it because you have better access to the fittings that way

I filed a VERY small groove in the threads of the new fitting, about half of the thread length, kinda like making a thread chaser, and got mine to bite. I was a bit nervous, but was very careful to not go any deeper than the minor diameter of the threads, and it worked very well.

So how much is a new rack? Should I say f it and take it to a mechanic? I got the line to bite but I think it went in at an angle. When I was tightening it, a side of the receptor for the hose(rack) broke off. Looked at the new hose and I think the shit is stripped. So new hose n rack

Got her all put back together. I found a rack on the internet for under 300. Hope it is decent. Got new lines for 90 from rock auto. Car is still on the jack stands, I am going to level her and fix some of the rust issues. I got some rust stop, paint and fluid film. The rack job wasn't too fun at all.

Hey Mike, can you elaborate on your technique. I have new pressure line I was trying to start thread, and having tried complete 5 hours not even started. how do you groove thread? Did you mean you file it down to start thread?

Kiran,
You file a groove at 90 degrees to the threads. It's like making a spark plug into a "chaser" for beat up threads in a cylinder head. You don't need to go very deep, or make the groove very long, maybe the first 5 or 6 threads of the fitting. This needs to be done carefully, because if you screw it up, you lose the whole assembly!
