2006 4Runner 4X4 Limited v8 High Mileage maintenance Q's!
Bought from Toyota dealer with about 143k on the clock... Timing belt was done around 115k...
Truck drives smoothly, just did full synthetic oil change. I just want to make sure the engine/tranny stay solid and no major things break.... Should I consider transmission flush?! Plan on having the truck for the next forever!
Thanks!

I recently bought a V8 4runner also. I drained and top off the tranny, new gear oil in the rear diff and transfer case, lastly grease the drive shafts fittings.

I'm not handy whatsoever... Any idea how much all that would cost at dealer?

The transmission drain and fill should be less than $150. Not sure on the gear oil, but I would guess another $300 combined for the differentials and transfer case. If you can change your oil, you can definitely change the gear oil in the differentials and transfer case; it's really pretty simple (but can be messy).

I would change the transmission filter too if it has never been done at 143k, especially if it's been used as a towing vehicle. Sure if it had been done in the last 60k, yeah just do a flush, but over a 100k, and I know it's going to hurt on the V8 being the exhaust has to be removed.Just start spaying the exhaust bolts with penetrate at least a day or 2 before you disassemble.
It's not hard once you get past the exhaust, and if it comes off easily the rest of it is easy, and think of the satisfaction you'll have in cleaning out the bottom of the pan and the magnets, you won't have that old contamination ever getting back up into your transmission.
WIX Filters - Heavy Duty Transmission Filters - Products Information
Quote:
Contaminants can enter your transmission fluid system in the manufacturing process. They can also enter the transmission through the vent, or through the dipstick and fill tube during fluid level checking/filling. Most of the time, however, contaminants are the result of normal wear. These contaminants consist of metal chips and flakes from gears and bushings and fine fibrous material from clutch facings.
WIX transmission filters protect transmissions against contaminants in the transmission fluid system. Proper filtration helps improve transmission life by minimizing wear and preventing sticking and scoring of sensitive shift control valves. In the event of a part failure, the filter also guards against secondary damage to other parts and thus helps to minimize repair costs.

Just had my tranny, front & rear diffs and transfer case fluids done today. Toyota ATF in the tranny and Red Line synthetic for the rest. Was a little over $300 at my trusted Toyota mechanic.

No, not the Toyota dealer. A small shop near my house that I trust and specializes in Toyotas. Dealer would probably be around $500 for same service.
I typically do my drive train fluids every 50K. You can google or check your manual for the recommended intervals.

Is there a master preferred list of exactly what lube goes with each drive train item?
i.e.
Tranny = Toyota ATF (weight?)
Rear Diff = ?
Propshaft Spline = ? (fix for rear bump syndrome)
Ujoints = ?
Other locations = Red line (weight?)

Front, rear differentials and center transfer case oil change is SUPER easy. Just make sure to crack the fill bolts loose first before the drains. The transmission is still easy but a little more difficult as if you want to get all (read: most) of the fluid swapped out you have to do multiple drain and fills (3qts or so comes out each time, I did 4 drain and fills) til the fluid coming out is the color of new fluid. Also have to drive a little between each d&f, like a mile or two?
Biggest ripoff ever to have it done at a dealer or a shop IMO.

I would be a little cautious about a flush, especially if it drives and shifts smoothly. I would *hope* the dealer would've checked everything over and done all pertinent maintenance, but you never know. Either way, the front/rear diffs and transfer case are easy enough to change fluids on--as others mention, just make sure you crack open the fill plugs before you loosen the drain plugs. The transmission drain and fill is a bit more complicated due to getting the fluid level set right, but there are many write-ups on here of how to do it correctly. Oh, also changed the trans filter while I was at it, which required pulling apart some of the exhaust to be able to drop the pan.
I bought my 4Runner from a private seller at 175,000 miles, changed front/rear diffs and transfer case fluids, as well as a trans drain and fill. I'm at just over 234,000 miles now and it still shifts smoother than many other vehicles with less than half the mileage. Stay up on your drivetrain maintenance and you'll be set for a long time.

for the transmission use Toyota WS fluid. and only toyota WS fluid.
front and rear diff, and Tcase use a full synthetic gl5 75-90 gear oil.
for the driveshaft and ujoints i usually use a molly fortified grease, nothing special. most high temp wheel bearing greases will work.
